LOGICK ONE 04-02-12 02:34 PM

Warm morning commute to work, stopped by Newport Beach Pier to hang out for a moment and watch the surfers before I made my way to my office.

lots of interesting commutes here! I've been riding to work in LA for about a year now, just joined to forum to start working on some bicycle mechanic skills. My commute today was rough. Last week a car hit me while I was going to work (turned right into me--fortunately I was basically fine). So I bought an old frame off craigslist so I could still ride to work, and apparently I should have spent some time making sure it was in good mechanical order because as I was on a descent today I shifted, and something nasty happened with the rear derailleur. I heard the chain come off and all sorts of bad noises, I tried to brake, and ended up eating asphalt. The derailleur ended up in my spokes. My knee is a bit unhappy, but fortunately no cars around. So that was a bummer, and two bikes down in two weeks. As stressful as urban riding can be it still beats the car for me. Sometimes it takes motivation to get on the bike in the morning, but I'm always happy at the end of the ride. Hopefully I can get back on soon.

To think I whine about cold weather. Is the guy that hit you buying you a new bike?

She's paying to fix it (and I was going to have her pay for my cheap-y craigslist bike too as a "rental"--still will but that didn't work out as well as hoped). It looks like I got lucky with my cross check and just the front wheel needs replacing, new bar tape, etc. The car apparently missed the fork (and also missed my leg). Fortunately they were actually turning from a complete stop -- most drivers in LA glide through stop signs and red lights when making right turn and have a fair bit of speed. This person just didn't look because she was trying to wedge into traffic.

Well put.

Rimmer 04-02-12 05:36 PM

Today's weather was nice--60 degrees and breezy. I took it nice and easy today, because there's a bit of tightness on the side of my legs. I need to stretch more. I stretched this morning after my warm shower and through the weekend. My HR keeps getting lower even with good speed. Nothing spectacular today except for a slight change in my route. I didn't like the very busy intersection with no lights I encountered, so I won't be going that way again. Something about it didn't seem as safe.

I wanted him to think I never saw him, so when I would ditch him it would be even more badass. If they wave at me, I wave back, but I usually don't initiate contact. The day before that, Thursday I believe, I saw a girl at the other end of an intersection. She was wearing cycling glasses. I couldn't see her eyes, but I believe she was gawking at me.

Hey Fizzaly, welcome back. You didn't miss much winter wise. It a very mild winter here. I didn't bring my MTB out for the commute all winter. Another mild morning at 48F (9C), but the wind is back and no doubt it will be worse this afternoon.

Winter in Boise hasn't been much either, I've only had to ride the MTB twice never did use the studs this year.

This morning it was a bit chilly at 30f ride home was 54 and breezy with cold wind, tomorrow is expected to be 65f with 40+mph winds

Chalupa102 04-02-12 09:45 PM

Good commutes but the winds definitely slowed me down. It also didn't help that I was a little sore from hiking Mt Monadnock yesterday.

52F and partly cloudy with mainly crosswinds and some headwinds from the NNW @ 12-16mph gusting to 27mph for the ride in. Nearly saw a three car pile up. A vehicle going the opposite direction was stopped waiting to turn left onto a road. The next thing I heard was tires screetching as a car was slamming on the brakes to avoid hitting the stopped vehicle. The next two vehicles all locked up their brakes as well to all avoid rear ending each other. I did have my video camera set up but unfortunately I was not recording at the time. It was probably one of the most rediculous things I have seen in a while. Sightlines are not an issue there, so I'm guessing it was just a bunch of people not paying attention and causing a chain reaction. This is where it happened: http://g.co/maps/zq76z. Besides that, it was a pretty slow ride due to the wind.

43F and dark with mainly crosswinds and some headwinds from the NNE @ 16-22mph gusting to 34mph for the ride home. I was hoping for some nice tailwinds, but no such luck. I swear it seems recently everytime I'm heading home on Berkshire Ave, I'm fighting the wind. This evening I was especially struggling with the wind right at my face. As soon as I got off that road where I'm heading a slightly different direction, it wasn't nearly as bad.

fletchh 04-03-12 04:38 AM

Just a normal April morning at 32F (0C). It will get up to the 60s (upper teensC), but hopefully there will be no wind. I don't fight the wind, but sometimes I just have to get out of the way of a car.

Wonderful.

essiemyra 04-03-12 05:39 AM

a very nice if not chilly (28f) morning ride this am. Winds were not much and the sky was light. The beginnings of a good day. It should be in the 50f's this afternoon. I may extend my ride home, I am not sure yet. It is a wait and see how you feel thing.

vtjim 04-03-12 05:56 AM

Sunny, 30F/-1C, with a headwind. Took the MUP today. Rather have a headwind with nice views than a headwind with views of...traffic. :)

The sun was low in the sky. Remember folks, cagers can't see too well in those conditions.

CptjohnC 04-03-12 07:23 AM

A glorious day for riding today, esp. after a full week without commuting last week. Temps in the high 30s or low 40s at the start, so just a bit chilly, but after 15-20 minutes, I was just right. everything was going well, with light cycling traffic on the W&OD and Custis trails, but when I got to Rosslyn, the police had closed the trail heading down to the Mount Vernon trail. Had to cross Key Bridge and ride through Georgetown. I think it added about 10-15 minutes of total time, partially because I had to think about navigating in addition to riding (I'm a simple minded soul).

Hopefully whatever body they found/crime scene they were processing will be fully investigated before my ride home this evening.

gecho 04-03-12 07:56 AM

-2C with a light headwind. I had the sun in my eyes for much of the ride. It will be nice when the city starts sweeping the sand off the streets. Only one ride this week since I have to haul my 28 lb hardware project to class on Thursday.

4st7lbs 04-03-12 08:29 AM

Biking over to the Red Sox-Nationals exhibition game here in an hour or two. Perfect day for baseball and cycling - mid 60s and sunny.

TheTreauth 04-03-12 10:16 AM

About 40 degrees, cloudy, slight headwind, but a very nice ride anyway.

Guitarfool5931 04-03-12 12:57 PM

About 55 degrees, not a lot of wind, and sunny. Beautiful. Here's hoping the rain doesn't catch me on the way back though. :-/

Just a wonderful day. Came home early to take son to dentist around noon proably 75F. nice.

gecho 04-03-12 02:12 PM

+15C for the ride home with a good mostly tailwind, would have been a nice day for shorts. I had a ulock in my trunk bag because I couldn't remember if I was paid up till the end of March or April for the bike cage. Along with a laptop I was bringing home in a pannier I had a bit of extra weight today.

I told myself I was going to have a nice slow relaxing ride home. But as I exited the campus onto the main road I looked down at my speedometer it read 38km/h. So I ditched plan A and gave 'er the beans all the way home. I got up 48km/h on my favourite downslope section. There were a lot of riders out this afternoon.

making 04-03-12 02:15 PM

Tailwind...what...is that?

Fizzaly 04-03-12 03:41 PM

37f This morning with a slight headwind, 61f on the way home with 20mph cross winds at one point I was fully leaning into the wind felt odd.

hotwheels 04-03-12 06:31 PM

Morning was quiet and comfortable at 42f/5.5c. I noticed some gangster graffiti on my neighbor's nice white fence so, that sucked. Ride home had a decent headwind today and about 70f/21.1c. Traffic wasn't so bad. Lots of bees going to/fro work and no shortage of pollen. It was a nice Spring day to pedal.

RGNY 04-03-12 08:24 PM

evening ride to fencing practice and back. 50f when i left, 42f on the way home. discovered the joy of knee warmers.

only had one tool encounter. guy sped past my left in some "Fast and Furious" wannabe Honda, about 8" away, so he could cut in front of me to get into the right turn only lane next to me.

today's weapon of choice: Leader 722ts fixed. was feeling uncomplicated.

dygituljunky 04-03-12 10:54 PM

I am absolutely loving my new trike. I'm no longer pained in the taint and wrists when I arrive, I can look up and around better than I can on my diamond-frame, and I'm getting up to my old speeds already.

The nice weather helps, too.

fletchh 04-04-12 04:31 AM

It was 47F (8C) here and felt warmer, so I couldn't tell if I was expecting a storm on not. This time of year is always difficult to dress for, so I was overdressed this morning. Shorts and sleeveless on the way home.

making 04-04-12 04:35 AM

Constant headwind the whole way in. some guy in a van doesnt understand the idea of a red flashing light vs a yellow one. Weather guy said it was raining out, so I look outside and the concrete was dry, rode in no rain and it still isnt raining. I am no longer gonna watch the weather guy. oh yea, great ride.

Weather forecasters have it in for us.:)

Third day in a row riding my bike to work...first time this season that I have left without a jacket on. It was 64 degrees this morning, and I brought my light shell jacket, but left it in the pannier and wore a long sleeve jersey. I live in south Florida and only feel warm when it's over 80 degrees, so the first mile or so was a little cool, but once I got going it was good to be without the jacket. Actually have had several GOOD commutes this week, one close call yesterday morning with an elderly motorist in a huge Buick/Merc? Other than that, it's been really good! I LOVE to commute to work on my BIKE, and the NEW one will be here today with FedEx....

Lots and lost of stupid people. Like someone opened a door to some institution and let all the patients out... The amount of stupidity is incredible out there...

TheTreauth 04-04-12 08:04 AM

My Origin8 drop bar ends came in yesterday and I put them on this morning before I left home. Good timing for those, 15-20 mph headwind coming in to work today. Headwinds still suck but these did help a bit. Also nice using drops for the first time in my life. When I originally bought my Giant Rapid I went with the flat bar road bike because I was around 70 lbs heavier than I am now and my knees would hit my big fat gut when I was in the drops. lolololol

So it was a sunny but very windy ride in to work this morning, still gorgeous.
