I only rode two days this week, and was bored with the same 9 mile route home that I ride in the morning, so I decided to try a route that I hadn't done in a while. It's the first time I tried the steep hill at about mile 2.5 on my Fargo. The Fargo has 20 gear inches at the bottom, my Rocky Mountain has about 17. I made it up the hill in second gear, which I guess means I could climb a steeper hill. Luckily I don't know where one is, handy anyway.

37 and raining this morning, about 50 and barely misting this evening. Not as nice as I was hoping, but it was still a shorts and t-shirt ride home.

I just started commuting not too long ago, and it's been great in the mornings! There is usually a 5-10 mph headwind that blows me straight where I'm going, plus it's almost down hill all the way from my house. My arrival times started around 30 min, and now they're down to about 23 min, depending on which lights I catch. On the way home, there is usually a stronger headwind, and it's mostly uphill. It usually takes the full 30 min to get home.

I'm glad I started! I haven't filled up in over a month! Plus, I'm slowly gaining towards this last **** 10 lbs that I haven't been able to shed since winter.

My Saturday commute in to work is always a welcomed break due to less traffic.
This morning the last third of the trip in was interesting because of the street closures due to the Music City Marathon.
Barricaded streets I had to myself with few cars.
Even went outside on my first break and cheered them on as they made the turn by my building.
Slow, easy pace on the way home.
Sunday's commute is when I do a full circuit around the 'Parthenon' across from Vandy for inspiration...

Friday's commute was probably the worst dealing with headwind. I checked the weather sites after i got home and said gusts up to 30 miles an hour. There we're a few times where I wanted to jump off and just walk - ;)

I live on the coast and have done just that sometimes when the headwind was such that I was in a tuck, spinning madly and only going 4 mph. I can walk faster than that, so that's what I did.

Very, very nice ride in. Kinda windy but warm. Storms overnight but gone before I started out, nice fresh air ride some deep puddles and some completely dry areas. Two weird things this AM. First as I passed a second story condo the curtains were blowing out side and attracted my attention, it appeared someone was climbing in or out, but by the time I got focused on the window instead of missing the water puddles i did not see anyone, and the curtains were still blowing around, so maybe I imagined the person. A few miles later I was coming up to a bar on the right side. A car was sitting about 20 ft off the bike lane in the parking lot with the door open and the dome light on, with some woman was peeing. There was no other traffic and when she seen me she kinda waved. Guess she slept in her car and woke up and had to pee.

A nice ride in at 48f (9C). This time of year I am rediscovering things in the light along my ride. Not that they change from year to year, but just the revelation of riding in the light after spending most of the year in the dark.

lol...I really noticed the light today too and was going to post a similar thought.

Lots and lots of runners out in this light.

It was a very chilly 32f this morning. My fleece gloves did not keep my hands warm enough. Though the sun was rising in the sky and blue skies, so a good ride in!!!

tarwheel 04-30-12 06:11 AM

Warm, cloudy morning with temps in the low 60s, so I decided to ride with no vest for a change. Made it a block down the street and realized it was misting rather heavy, so I turned around and went back to put on my lightweight rain jacket. Of course, the mist quit as soon as I left my neighborhood and then I was dressed too warm, so I ended up getting all wet from sweating. Other than that, it was a nice commute although my legs were very tired from riding a metric century in very windy weather yesterday.

vtjim 04-30-12 06:13 AM

32F/0C under a clear blue sky. About halfway into my ride I reeled in a "Bobcat", a slow moving construction vehicle, and drafted it for kicks. Flicked the Soho's IGH up to top gear and loped along behind the thing. A very easy ride. :)

I cleaned the layer of winter dust off of the Soho yesterday. She looks brand new again. The worst part on the bike was under the bottom bracket, and that only required a little extra washing to remove some caked-on dirt. I love not having a greasy chain drive.

I'm a few days late with this post...but anyway..... All last week was pretty decent weather here in mid-Illinois. There was some chance of rain, but it didn't amount to anything. Fought headwinds on most mornings. But it held steady and gave nice tailwinds in the evening. Thursday evening there was more auto traffic than I'd figured on. But the drivers were a bit more polite than usual. All in all, a good commuting week.

TheTreauth 04-30-12 07:41 AM

I did not commute by bicycle today, I ran the 4.5 miles to work with my backpack on instead. It was rainy but it was a good run. I may start alternating running/biking to work.

vdot 04-30-12 07:55 AM

First time commuting to work today - door to door is 6 km(3.7 miles) in downtown Toronto and it took me 30 minutes! Wasn't trying to set a new world record, but rode at a leisurely pace and enjoyed the fresh air and scenery. It was refreshing and I'll tell ya what - Never taking transit again...good bye TTC!

cehowardGS 04-30-12 08:58 AM

In the wee dark hours of the morning, I come streaking down the road like a bat out of hell. With lights ablazing. Needless to say, the first leg of my commute was dam good!! ;)

Welcome aboard and congratulations on your first commute!

48F; drizzly

CommuteCommando 04-30-12 11:16 AM

High fifties. Rode slow to recover from minor, but annoying injury.

oisin 04-30-12 12:15 PM

this happened to me last week, but thought i would post a friendly reminder for people to take the lane if you need to! i was riding home from work and it goes under a freeway and narrows, and the road on the right is really chewed up and hard to ride on, so I moved over into the lane but not all the way into the lane, and some ******* comes speeding by super close and clips me with his passenger side mirror on my left hand. didn't knock me over or anything but man was I pissed. Rode like a bat out of hell, caught up with him after about 6 stoplights and knocked on his window. think i gave him a good scare. So just take the lane. who cares if someone honks at you. Better than getting knocked into by a car.

Today's commute was a bit slow, not sure why--maybe because I had my clothes in a messenger bag instead of a backpack and didn't feel as steady.

Grim 04-30-12 04:33 PM

62f for the ride in. just warm enough I can tough it out without a jacket 87f for the ride home. Jonesing to break out one of my hot rods but I have been taking lunch and need a rack for it. :(
Might be time for one of those seat post jobs. They padded good? 2 of my bikes have early 80's super campy seat posts and really would suck to mess them up.

Boudicca 04-30-12 05:47 PM

Worst. Commute. Home. Ever.

Rain. Headwind. 5C (40F?). Wet. Cold. Miserable.

Rimmer 04-30-12 07:15 PM

I felt unbelievably powerful on the way back home. It had to been that 8-10mph tailwind. Going up that stinky hill seemed pretty easy.

Yeah, I take the lane at red lights. I accelerate rather quickly or quicker in a low gear relative to other motorists anyway.

Great commutes today.

63F and sunny with winds from the S @ 9-10mph for the commute in this afternoon. Felt great for the whole ride.

53F and dusk with winds from the S @ 8-14mph for the commute home this evening. Felt great for most of the ride, but then slightly cramped up and was dragging the last mile on the climb to my house. I'm not really surprised getting the cramp because I rode a total of 221.9 miles from last Monday to Sunday with 97.4 of those miles being from this weekend. Tomorrow is going to be a rest day.

KBentley57 04-30-12 08:27 PM

For all those who plan their commutes,

Check out windmapper.com. It's a vector wind map that's been surprisingly useful for planning rides, commutes, ect. It's got good coverages around my location, but I think all of it's data comes from airports.

fletchh 05-01-12 05:06 AM

Heavy rain at the start, then light, then nothing, then light then nothing. I did not get as wet as I had planned on. Warm weather 58f (14c) so the rain is not an issue. I was more concerned about lightening, which did not happen. Hopefully, the same goes for when I head out today.

dcb23 05-01-12 06:24 AM

Warm, rainy, not too bad. Replaced one of my two tail lights for maximum blinky.

MK313 05-01-12 06:45 AM

Grrr! Just venting a bit. Yesterday was perfect when I woke up, but weather.com said 70% chance of thunderstorms starting at 10 AM & lasting all day. I checked it Sunday night & then again first thing Monday morning. After seeing the forecast not change, I decided to drive. Sure enough 10 AM comes & goes, no storm. At noon, they update the forecast to push the rain off until 6 pm. It eventually stormed around 8 pm, so I would have been perfectly fine. No problem, Tuesday's forecast is clear, i'll just ride then. I wake up this morning & look out the window & it's raining. Oh well. Hopefully tomorrow is better.

tarwheel 05-01-12 07:56 AM

Our weather is going from spring to summer this week, with highs supposed to reach near 90 F or higher through Saturday. That is gonna take some getting used to. The first week of 90+ temps is always hard, particularly when humidity is high like right now.

CommuteCommando 05-01-12 09:39 AM

Light misting rain, but mid fifties. I gotta get fenders!
