I think it was a case of they didn't see me. It was at an intersection and they were accelerating from a stop so I got pretty lucky.
|
Bit windy but perfect temperature. Taking it easy on the way to work I didn't sweat at all. Could have worn my work clothes and they would be have been good to go. :)
|
For a change, wind direction was different, but the wind wasn't very strong. The tube I patched this morning worked fine. It has four rema patches on it and still going strong. I wonder how many I can get on it. Commute was fine except for one encounter. At an intersection as the light turned green, I proceeded to go straight, and some lady makes her left turn approaching me, but I moved out of the way. By law, I clearly had the right-of-way. In my experience, black women are the worse drivers out here. I didn't look to see if she was on some phone. Some months ago, I had one in two lanes to my left tell me that I'm allowed to run red lights, because she thought that I'm considered a pedestrian on my bike.

heidenseek, I am glad that you are ok. Getting hit in any manner is frightening experience.
Nice ride in, drizzle, but nothing heavy. The sky was very dark, and something is coming this way, but it is good to get in ahead of it. This morning as in other mornings, sometimes I come off bridge over a highway, make a right into what is an industrial area, and in the dark as one of the large warehouses has been abandoned, as I get down the road I smell cigarette smoke in the same place. It's too dark to see anything, and I like to account for everyone around me in the dark. |
First morning I kinda worked up a sweat for a long time, I think it is 60F but it is kinda humid. Back to normal ride time, did not go through a time warp this morning.
|
Cool, lonely since I was out early, not much wind.
|
I took the car this am, so not a good ride in. I did ride a ten mile ride before I went to work this am, just to get the fresh air and wide awake feeling that riding gives me.

My first heavy rain since I started 6 weeks ago. 54°. I think I was wetter inside (sweat) my jacket and pants then outside. Even after sunrise it was dark. I was glad I had two rear flashers and a front flashing white light.
Haven't gotten a rain cover for my Topeak trunk bag yet but found tall kitchen trash bags fit just fine. Then found these Task Force 8-Pack 12" Canopy Tarp Ties at Lowes. Perfect size to stretch round the base of the trunk bag. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=246776 |
25 mph headwind directly at my 12 o'clock, gusting to 35 mph.
i love riding along chicago's lakefront, but i also hate riding along chicago's lakefront. i guess the optimist in me can say "at least it was one hell of an epic workout battling that wind for 15 miles" |
Beautiful ride this morning. It started to drizzle as I pulled out of the drive, but it never got any harder, so I kept riding. It stopped after about 10 minutes. Almost no cars today through the first 2/3 of the ride, which made it really nice.

Nice ride in this am, temps are perfect.
Last night I enjoyed a slight detour on the way home to enjoy the newly opened multi-use bridge over CSX tracks on the Annacostia river near my home. I've been watching this thing go up for more than a year. http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7263/7...c34e7053dd.jpg http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5232/7...68144b0495.jpg http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7082/7...055b25054f.jpg |
45F misty/rainy. I am back in the swing of what passes for spring around here for sure though, shorts, fingerless gloves, t-shirt under raincoat.

4/25/2012 - First one way commute of the year. I've been trying to get some miles in to build up to it but I suck so I just brought my bike to work and rode home. 17 miles. That's far for me right now. I left my vehicle at work so I had to ride back in the next day.
|
4/25/2012 - It's the next day. I adjusted my route and got it down to 15.16 miles. I think I can shave off a bit more but not much. I was very tired from yesterday so this was a struggle but I'm glad I did it. I'm going to keep doing one way's until I'm in better shape then do a both way a few times a week.

That said a trail has been slowly being built in my area. Not even started yet near my home. 2 Years ago I was excited as it would have been a great way for me to get to work. Mid 2010 they decided to move my office CLOSER so I wont have a need to ride but 1/4 mile of the next section that gets finished and its not sure its a better way to work then the way I go now.. Its suppose to go behind my neighborhood eventually but some property in that section that may have some issues. They are running it on a sewer easement but its really going to encroach on some private property and I'm sure there will be a fight since a couple of those owners have treated the easement as their property to the point of landscaping it and installing fences. I dont expect any progress till 2014 at the earliest. Back to the ride. We had a cold snap starting Sunday and it was EXTREMELY windy Monday Tuesday so I wussed out and drove. Last 2 days however have been very nice and tomorrow is suppose to be more of the same. |
Fastest ride home every, and I was on my slow bike and it was loaded. Did I mention I had a big wind again, I could get used to this, but alas, it wont last.
|
Had a great ride in the morning, but it was pouring cats and dogs for the ride home. Not too bad, but I hate having to dry the bike off when I get home. Bike is running great though :)
|
A nice ride and later in, so light. The temps are around 48f (9C), but the wind makes it a bit cooler. It is nice to come in with the sun shinning. I am thinking about making fridays may later day any way, so this is a good reason.
|
The ride in this morning featured big winds and warm temps. When you have to push yourself to get down a hill cause the wind is pushing you the other way, is just not right!
|
Found a new commutable day. Only 10km out, the streets are so busy a bike is faster than a motorcycle anyway for my smaller shifts between the 3 different kindergartens. Very happy. 20km more exercise for only 10 minutes more travel time... and that was on my old heavy utility bike. I also discovered a whole new riverside cycling trail and about 5 bike shops. Saves times on putting on the motorcycle armor as well.
|
First commute of the season. Took me 10 minutes longer than what it took me last year. Got to work on it...
|
Great commute this morning, nice weather and kept a fast pace. It was my first commute in probably 2 weeks where I wasn't battling the wind, and that really made a difference. I still caught every red light on my route but I'll take that over headwinds.
Had a close call with a car as I approached downtown, due to a moment's inattention. I was checking my cycle computer and also focusing my attention on a traffic signal 2 blocks ahead, so I didn't notice a car approaching on a side street. The car either ran the stop sign or misjudged my speed and wizzed across the road just in front of me, nearly clipping my front wheel. There is no way the driver didn't see me with my neon yellow jersey and two headlights, but I should have been more attentive. Usually a quick stare with my helmet light will prevent such occurrences. |

Everything seemed to be going swimmingly, until I crossed Memorial bridge and felt some steering wobble, which got significantly worse when I tapped the brakes. A flat, of course! I weighed my options, being less than 2 miles/ 10 minutes from work, and decided to see how much air it would hold if I pumped. Sure enough, the leak was pretty small, so I managed to go almost a mile before it flatted too much again. Another round of pumping, and I made it to within sight of work. More or less walked the bike to the bldg door. Spent way too much time changing the tube, because I had a devil of a time getting the thorn/splinter thing out of the tire itself. It was sharp, small and buried. Checked the rest of the tire and the rim for other potential issues, and finding none, finished the change. Hopefully all will be well, because when I went to patch the old tube, I found my patch kit glue empty/dry. 4 more patches, but I doubt they'll hold without the glue (sure, they're self adhesive, but they're designed to work with the glue, right?) I am pretty sure I have one more spare tube in my panniers, so I guess I'm okay if I get another flat on the way home, but I'd rather not find out. And people wonder why I roll with a patch kit and at least one spare tube!
Happy birthday to me! |
Headwind! And I could have used some light gloves.
|
Shirtsleeves!!! Woohoo!!!
|
43F and clammy from yesterday's rain. Some mist but I didn't need my raincoat.
|
41 degrees and wet from rain overnight. Significantly cooler then all the other days this week. I dressed appropriately warm (unusual for me) and actually enjoyed the cooler overcast ride in. Caught up with a female coworker 1 mile out and rode/chatted with her for the final mile. A great ride in. Took my time showering/dressing and now catching up over french press coffee. Its starting out to be a damn fine Friday.

By the way, I am on the bike in the picture brother today. .An 89 Ironman Master!! ;) Old steel and a commute is like sipping fine wine!! ;) |
Nice commute. Calm wind. Rear tube is still slowly leaking. It's very slow. I keep having to patch it. I don't know what's going on. Will have to look at it tomorrow--too dark at the moment. I had one driver that wouldn't pass me. I just looked at him/her in my mirror and he/she just kept following me. Maybe checking me out or my taillight. Well, I got fed up with it and even waved for them to pass me. I was strolling along at 18-20mph or so on a 45 speed limit road. Still following me and wouldn't pass with two lanes available, so I just upshifted a couple cogs and sped off until I got to the next light. They ended up turning right but had ample time to pass me.
