Great commutes today.

64F and mostly cloudy with mainly crosswinds from the S @ 12-19mph gusting to 24mph for the ride in this afternoon. Made some changes to my coromobile last week and I could definitely notice a difference. I almost had my fastest ride in this semester. I was at over 18mph average (which is about 1mph faster then what I'm usually at), but hit primarily headwinds and crosswinds once on Berkshire Ave, State and Bay St, which dropped my average. Still had a pretty fast ride in though. Not as fast as I was hoping for, but oh well.

51F and dark with mainly crosswinds and some headwinds from the SSE @ 11-15mph for the ride home.

kookaburra1701 04-24-12 02:14 AM

55F, with a mist/drizzle that was more drizzle than mist. Sunset is happening right in the middle of my commute into work now.

Where I live, every afternoon the wind blows in my face on the way home nearly every day. Often it is pretty heavy winds and I complain mightly to my fellow bicycle commuter who rides the other way, thus has a tail wind nearly every day. Yesterday I knew we were suppose to have sustained winds about 20 with gusts to 40mph. I figured my legs would hurt by the time I got home. The part I did not catch was the winds from the North. That means I had a 20mph sustained tailwind, I honestly never rembmer that happening before in my several years of bicycle commuting. Fast ride but I dont think I would like it every day.

fletchh 04-24-12 04:39 AM

It is chilly, but no wind at 41f (5C). I have the same problem with west winds going home. I do not like the north winds as they can slam sideways and bring a chill, but they are rarer for me.

dcb23 04-24-12 05:14 AM

Dry. cool, mostly uneventful save for the strange lady I encountered (posted a note on the weird things thread).

stockholm 04-24-12 05:19 AM

Great. Warm. Somewhat crowded now that spring has tentatively arrived.

essiemyra 04-24-12 05:32 AM

The weather is warm this am, but I have no idea where the winds are coming from. They pushed me around a little still though, a nice ride in.

vtjim 04-24-12 05:59 AM

Damp. 41F/5C, with a tailwind. It was raining up until about 30 minutes before I left. Now I see blue sky.

I had to replace the front brake cable on my Soho. It was starting to fray where it's attached to the caliper. A very simple operation. Mental note: When I've tightened the cable as far as I can with the nuts on the brake lever, it's probably time to replace the cable. :)

You'll probably go several years before it happens again!

My commute was just the opposite. Whichever way I'm heading, the wind seems to be coming from that direction. Rode into to terrible headwinds heading home last night, so I was hoping I might get a break this morning. No such luck. Winds did a 180 overnight and I had headwinds again riding to work this morning. Sure glad that I have drop bars on my commuter.

We are having crazy weather for April, or at least it seems that way. Perhaps it just seem crazy because March was so warm -- something like 6-8 degrees warmer than average. I swear, April has been colder in NC than March was. I know that I have had more morning commutes in the 30s and fewer 70-80 degree afternoons this month than last. However, it might just be that April temps are more normal after having such a warm March. Oh, and it's been windier too.

wphamilton 04-24-12 07:48 AM

I had the wind as an excuse yesterday, but have to reach for one today for going slow. It was under 40, and too many clothes ...

groovestew 04-24-12 08:45 AM

I'm back!

Today, anyway. This was my first cycle-commute since I had a collision with a car this past September resulting in a badly broken wrist. I've been able to come up with lots of excuses for delaying my return, but today, I ran out, so on the bike I went.

One of my excuses was that I didn't have a commuter bike. My all-purpose commuter was destroyed in the collision, and I'm still putting together a replacement. I also have an old steel road bike that I commuted regularly on, but it needs repairs before it can be ridden again, and I haven't gotten around to taking it in. My other bike I'm too paranoid about leaving unattended in a bike rack downtown all day.

So, today I rode my wife's old mountain bike. It's way too small for me (she's 5 inches shorter than me), but it's in good mechanical condition, and it got me to work okay. It has grip shifts!

HardyWeinberg 04-24-12 10:57 AM

50F grey and breezy. Hopefully summer isn't over yet.

:D I did that once. Grip shifts drive me bat-s crazy. How do people ride with those things?

Good to have you back. Keep the rubber side down!

TheTreauth 04-24-12 12:34 PM

This has been such a windy spring :\

Rear tube is leaking again. I just patched it last Monday. I wonder if it has something to do with the tire. It's getting old. I'll have to patch it in the morning. I need to clean the cassette anyway. The Lezyne Road Drive pump is a piece of crap. The amount of effort and number pumps is a pain. I pump the tube to 120PSI then leak it to 115PSI. HR monitor has been really wonky lately. I replaced the battery and now it doesn't work... at all. Then, I read this on their website.

If a battery is placed in the device too soon after the old battery is removed, it can cause the accessory to experience a power overload causing the device to fail to operate.

To prevent a power overload for your accessory:
1. Remove the old battery
2. Wait 30 to 60 seconds
3. Install the new battery
I do not know why that stupid Edge sometimes doesn't accrue distance. Cadence and speed are working, but the distance stays at 0 sometimes. Sometimes it takes like 5 seconds or so to start recording when I press start. I don't know what's up with that delay. It doesn't always do that.

Otherwise, commute was nice. Weather was cool.

Easy, if there's a headwind, turn around—tailwind. People notice headwinds but not tailwinds.

fletchh 04-25-12 04:43 AM

The same this morning as yeseterday, 41f (5C), and it will get warmer in the afternoon. The ride home yesterday was nice and the weather was much better than predicted, even the wind was less troublesome. Lots of sirens in the dark, coming from the direction of the 2 highways.

essiemyra 04-25-12 05:23 AM

It was 33f when I rode through town this am. A nice ride to work.

dcb23 04-25-12 05:30 AM

Uneventful ride in, no wind for a change. I did encounter a guy on a recumbent.

krobinson103 04-25-12 05:51 AM

Very wet. Took out the truck/utility bike because my nice bike is suffering from too much rain exposure and needs better quality shifters on the bars. My motorcycle wet weather gear isn't really the best, but it keeps me dry at least.

vtjim 04-25-12 05:58 AM

Dry today, overcast, with a nice tailwind, and I got into a draft behind a large truck and some cars. Was cruising easily at 25MPH for a while. Good times. 43F/6C.

Boudicca 04-25-12 06:50 AM

I wasn't going to ride today. It snowed yesterday and it was cold today -- around 3C when I got up.

But the sun was shining and it looked so nice that I changed out of my work clothes after breakfast, loaded them in the new pannier and dug out biking gear and rode in. Glorious, although tights, wool shirt and winter jacket might have been overdoing it a little bit.

tarwheel 04-25-12 07:23 AM

Wind, wind, wind. It's windy in the morning, windy in the afternoon, almost always a headwind or crosswind. When will the weather finally calm down? The forecasters said there was a 0% chance of rain here today. When I got up and checked the radar, there was a huge band of showers that appeared to be heading our way. Watched the morning news and the weather gal said "Don't worry, those showers are just sprinkles and will pass to the South." Guess what? By the time I got downtown, it was raining. Not a soaker but it sure was more than 0%.

Steely Dan 04-25-12 07:54 AM

the first 5 miles this morning i had a light mist. that changed to a light, sporadic drizzle for the next 5 miles, and for miles 10-15 it was a proper drizzle/light rain, and within a block or two of the office it became a proper rain.

i love getting into the office just before the heavy stuff starts falling.

linus 04-25-12 08:15 AM

A nice day to ride in Toronto.

HardyWeinberg 04-25-12 09:28 AM

52F and gray. Supposed to rain. Hope it's like the all-enveloping soft mist of last night more than the downpour of previous weeks.

heidenseek 04-25-12 09:31 AM

Bad commute today, I got hit by car. I am ok but the bike got scuffed up a bit (namely the new 105 pedals I just put on last night).

Dam, sorry about that. Glad you okay and here posting about it. Was it a situation where the car DIDN'T SEE YOU, or something else?

Again, glad you okay, because the odds are against us when we come in contact with 3000+ lbs of moving steel!!

JReade 04-25-12 01:42 PM

~60 degrees this am, Long sleeve jersey doesn't really do anything. It was an okay ride, a little later than I like getting to work, so my shower/cool down period was a bit rushed.

cehowardGS 04-25-12 01:49 PM

I had a super commute as always! ;) Lately I have been making my commute LONGER by choice. I only have about 10 miles each way. But, I stretch the first 10 miles to 25, and they be in the dark too. ;)This morning I was riding my 88 Centurion Ironman Expert.http://www.cehoward.net/mastexp63.jpgNot shown in the picture, I had it decked out with these two flashlights up front. Oh boy. ..they made the dark morning, look like sunshine... ;)http://www.cehoward.net/M10-00.jpgAlso, I had this on my helmet... ;)http://www.cehoward.net/mounthel28.jpgThese items makes my commute in the pitch dark, big fun!! ;)
