This morning: 56°, misty the first half, then a light rain.
The ride was uneventful except a taxi turned right on red immediatly in front of me. He saw me coming but misjudged my speed. It was downtown, with a slight downhill, so I was cruising at the speed-limit. I could tell he/she misjudged by the way they stepped on it to get out of the way after turning. --- I've ridden in by bike 4 days this week (Monday was a holiday) and 4 days last week. I drove my son to school on the last day of school. |
49 degrees, 25mph headwind, drizzle for all 15 miles.
what a way to welcome in june! on monday it was 90 degrees and i was sunbathing by the pool, WTF? |
Rode to the gym and then to work from there. Both trips it was a windy downpour and 90% of the trip was on the busiest road in my city, but it's fun to get out in that stuff for the challenge of it. Unfortunately I don't have fenders on my new commuter (early 80's Fuji S12-S Ltd) but I put a rack on it yesterday and that did help a bit. I ordered the fenders a few minutes ago... Live and learn.

Only my third commute this year, but now I'm running out of excuses. My new commuter bike is still waiting on one magical part before I can really ride it regularly, but this week, Sixty Fiver fixed up my steel road bike, so it's ready for fair-weather commuting. And boy oh boy, today is the definition of fair weather. 12C, almost no wind (a bit of a tail wind to help me along a couple busy roads), sunny...just a perfect morning for cycling.

Got up early because I wanted to get some miles in before it gets blazingly hot this afternoon. Rode to the office and dropped my backpack in my bike locker. Headed out to the bike trail for some non-motorized traffic intervals. Either a bear or a human a-hole dumped garbage cans and broke bottles all over the trail. Thought I'd managed to avoid the glass but back in midtown I heard a whiss-whiss-whiss. My front tire was getting soft, but the sealant I'd put in these tubes was doing its job. Gingerly rode the remaining few blocks back to the office. I guess I'll have to replace that tube before starting home at the end of the day, but no biggie.

I don't post in this thread much but last time was a little over a week ago when I told the sad tale of my drive side bottom bracket cup sheering off. I finally got it in to a mechanic who was able to remove the remainder of the cup without destroying the threads.
So my 1987 Trek lives to fight another day! :-) I am switching to a cartridge and hope to never have a problem like that again. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=253623 |
They did a pretty nice job of replacing the rail crossing and had a good tailwind coming home. Nice when things come together.

Left the house at 5:30. The forecast had said chance of showers but it didn't look too bad so I went ahead and started out. Then, the rain came. And the roads were already wet. Every time I looked back, there was a fountain springing up from my back wheel (no fenders yet). I was soaked by the time I got there (fortunately I don't wear my work clothes on the bike). Had to go around in squeaky, damp shoes all day though :D
The ride home was amazing. Sunny, warm, minimal head wind. I managed to keep a great pace and when I got to my driveway I felt like I could have gone another 50 miles. Great day with lessons learned about rain :) |
As I was in the bike lane approaching an intersection, some driver makes a U-turn then proceeds slowly into the bike lane and starts driving in it. I had to slow down for this incapoop. Also saw a bike rider carrying a small cooler in his hand and what looked like a folding chair strapped on his back. He didn't have a rack. They finally finished working on a road on my commute. I rode in higher gear than usual and was surprised how fast I was going. A little girl told me she likes my bike. It was mid 70s today with calm wind, not too bad.

Yesterday was crisp, (50°) but foggy on my ride in.
This morning and today they are showing rain. Someday I'll find some fenders that will work on my bike. Or...just get a new bike. Thinking about some back up routes for next week with the CMA stuff going on in town. |
needed to work on a saturday and meet some friends at a street festival on the way home (stayed far too late but bike wasn't stolen, thankfully.)

Nice weather and a bit cool, 59f (15c). I pulled out early on friday due to all the warning about tornadoes, but this area just got heavy rain and distant lightning. It sort of ended up in a vortex between two paths of the same storm, which produced EFOs in the east and west of Baltimore.

Almost perfect ride in I'd say, great way to start the week.
And a short week it'll be for me, I'm heading to Euro2012 in Poland and Ukraine. Next bike commute should be Friday, June 29...cheers all! |
Got a bonus commute on Friday. I was going to drive because I was meeting my wife for dinner after work and thunderstorms were expected in the afternoon, but decided to ride into work in the morning and catch a ride home with my wife. The thunderstorms showed up while we were eating dinner, but the rain stopped and roads dried by the time were finished walking around downtown, so I ended up riding home afterall. Fortunately my headlight had enough charge left in the battery to get me home because I didn't have a backup light like I do in the winter. Didn't get home until 9:30-10 pm, which was kind of strange.
Had another fast morning commute today, despite riding a metric century yesterday. Usually my legs are tired on Monday mornings from long weekend rides, but they felt surprisingly fresh this morning. I'll probably pay for it this afternoon. |
51F/11C under light rain this morning. Saw more bicyclists than usual. Met one rider at a 4-way-stop. He stopped for his sign. I stopped for my sign. Drivers around us must have been amazed. :p
|
A commuter was in front of me for a few miles, didnt seem too talkative though. Beautiful day to ride.
|
The light rain wasn't enough to actually get wet, but it was odd that there was not a single other cyclist on the way. Only one small group of walkers even. I guess everyone believed the weather forecasts.
I passed a doe with a newborn fawn barely a foot high. The little one couldn't run much so I had to slow down to about 10 mph to give them a chance to cross in front of me. |
Yesterday I rode the 10 mile round trip to a favorite store. I encountered three runners going the wrong way towards me in the bike lane. They stared at me as they approached in an aggressive manner,3 abreast, & I had to go into traffic around them. Charming. The woman had implants & huge, cut washboard abs, her face looked like leather, the men were big & fit.

Went back onto my bicycle for the first time in a few weeks to ride in to work yesterday. It was a lovely ride in and out, save the usual wind coming across lake superior. Took it slow, though, since I just finished overhauling the bike and wasn't confident that I did a good job of it. Looking forward to the rides for the rest of the week too, that's for sure. Still need to come up with an excuse to ride somewhere today and friday, which are this week's days off. Hurrah for working in a coffee shop.

Had a nice ride to work today. Bit cool around 11C but nice and not very windy.
Had my first close dog-chase today. I've seen him chase cars before but he hasn't chased me on bike until today. I'm reasonably certain he's friendly so I raced to stay ahead of him/her just for fun. |
Beautiful morning, no wind. In the last few blocks, I guess I got into a couple of silly commuter races. Couple of skinny kids (20ish), one male, one female, both riding creaking old upright cruisers, both looking like they wanted to show a thing or two to this old guy on a drop-bar bike. I was "beaten" by both of them, but only because my next turn was coming right up, and they were going straight. :)

I rode my bike to church yesterday. Hauling all of my bass guitar stuff on my back is challenging.
I allowed the local weather guessers to spook me out of riding today. They were calling for severe thunderstorms all day long. Now it appears it's shifted off to the south and is missing us. I'll be back on the bike tomorrow. |
48F, drizzly. Oh Junuary, how you fail to inspire me.

A kind of toasty 62 Deg.F at the start this morning, it almost light by the time I got to the Metro station. Saw another commuter on the train with a DaHon folder (his had 20" wheels though) and we talked about how the Metro was getting more crowded.
Why? More folks have jobs now that the economy is getting better, or more people not driving since gas prices are getting higher? Lots of non-folder bikes on the train this morning too; mostly Wal-Mart mountain bikes. Rick / OCRR |
Cool and breezy. Weird, unseasonable system coming in. My poor tomato plants will be so confused!

Back to the commuting scene :) Today was my first class for Summer session 1 at my college. I have class M-Th from 8am-10am with Fridays off. The plan is to ride the 40 mile R/T commute the 4 days a week. For the Spring semester I was usually only doing 3 days a week with sometimes 4. I gotta start training for some rides I've got coming up soon and I figure commuting will be the best way to do it.
54F and overcast with mainly cross and tailwinds from the NE @ 6-12mph this morning on the commute in. Had a pretty fast ride in and it would have been faster if I hadn't of gotten stuck behind the bus for a few stops. Tomorrow I'll take the other road that's basically the same distance if I see that bus again. 55F and overcast with scattered rain showers and mainly cross and headwinds from the NE @ 9-16mph gusting to 23mph this afternoon. Despite the winds, had one of the fastest rides home than I did while commuting during the Spring semester. I own it to a better designed fairing on my velomobile and being in better shape. |
Firstt of many posts in this thread. This morning was a pretty standard ride, I got on the bike trail earlier than usual and think I'll stick with that. Made my best time coming home, 1:06. Goal is 1 hour which will make average speed 15 MPH.

kinda cold (10C) after a few days of more than 15C
also it was slightly windy and it rained last night, so without fenders, i had some "street water" splash my back. |
Another nice day at 57f (14c). Scattered showers, but nothing my way.
