Unpleasant surprise last night: I had a broken spoke which I evidently hadn't noticed for several days probably. I didn't have a spare so I cut it in half and rigged up a splint with a section of brake cable for the commute today. Hopefully it will hold up until I can get to a shop tomorrow.

Wind was in my face the whole way to work, 20 km/h gusting to 40. I wanted to die - not fair to do to a noob. lol The same wind was at least partly at my back on the way home so I turned in my fastest time of 31 minutes averaging just under 30km/h for my 16km run. And my legs (and butt!) don't hurt, so I'm improving. :)

I did the 14 mile route both ways today (less than a mile on streets). I've done the long ride back more than the long ride to because I don't need to worry about being reaching the destination on time, but today on the way back I particularly felt drained of energy at times. I rode at a pretty mild pace much of the way. Oddly I was never passed up by speedster roadies, which usually happens a few times a ride for me. I saw many of them going the opposite direction, but none going my way. I actually wound up passing several very slow moving cyclists. There was a bit of a wind to my face but it wasn't one of the worst I've faced. Something seemed a bit spooky about not seeing roadies going my way... like they all knew something us Freds didn't. I got back home without figuring it out though. ;)

Best commute in a few weeks. Stopped in at the local bakery to grab a donut for after the ride, then hustled up so that i could catch a bus for the last 3 miles at sub-highway speeds. got to work early and beat the rain.

the donut was amazing too.

Warm and a bit windy. Nice ride, seen another commuter on a MTB. As nice as going to work on Monday morning could be.

fletchh 06-18-12 04:44 AM

A good morning and a nice temp at 61f (16c). It is supposed to get very hot this week, but at least the first morning is nice. The air quality gets so bad when it gets near 100.

essiemyra 06-18-12 05:18 AM

The ride was nice but I had to wear a long sleeve shirt due to it only being 50f degrees. I brought a short sleeve shirt for the ride home as it will be much warmer when I leave here. I am trying to pare down what I carry with me on the bike as I do not need the extra weight.

vtjim 06-18-12 05:49 AM

Sunny, 63F/17C, with a nice tailwind to push me along.

Can't say I'm looking forward to the commutes later this week. Wednesday 93F/34C, Thursday 100F/38C. Now that I'm wearing normal (work) clothes I'm not sure I want to ride in that heat. Maybe I'll revert back to the old ways and wear shorts and a jersey. Or, the bus is air conditioned. :P I'm getting soft.

Legs tired from sea kayaking on Friday and Saturday with long ride on Sunday, fighting the wind the whole time. The winds have been blowing persistently out of the north here for the past 4-5 days, which meant pleasantly cool temperatures. However, the winds shifted to the south just in time for my commute this morning, which meant headwinds all the way to work. I can't seem to buy a tailwind lately.

groovestew 06-18-12 08:59 AM

Nice easy commute today, decent temps, low winds. There was practically a cycle-commuter traffic jam downtown this morning - I don't think I've ever seen so many commuters in one place at one time before.

60F, muggy, large sunbreaks amid storm clouds.

Trek_geek 06-18-12 03:15 PM

Nice ride, no rain, from the VRE station to Fort Belvoir until I had a run in with a Fairfax Connector bus. I just caught a red light as I rolled under the light. I was in the bike lane, no cross traffic waiting. I heard the bus accelerating hard, run the light, get just past me and merge right across my lane, cutting me off to pull into a bus lane. Had to hit the brakes hard and swerve into the traffic lane to miss hitting him.
At least I got an email and a phone call back from the county when I sent a complaint via email with the time, road, bus and route number.

This morning was a struggle. I battled the wind for most of my 13 mile commute. I felt like I was riding in mud. On the way home it was much different, but my legs were feeling their age.

locolobo13 06-18-12 07:47 PM

111°F (44°C) on my way home. 1st time this year over 110. Relative humidity was only 5%. Summer's coming!

bragi 06-18-12 11:57 PM

I had a mild run in with a guy in an SUV. He tried to pass me in temporary stop-and go traffic, but I held my ground, because I don't like being pushed to the curb. He honked, and finally yelled at me, asking me what the hell I thought I was doing, acting like a car. When I replied that none of us were going anywhere fast, and that I was taking my turn, and maybe he should, too, he got a confused look on his face, then let it go. When he finally was able to pass me, I thought he would gun the engine, but didn't.

caloso 06-19-12 12:00 AM

Windy.

acidfast7 06-19-12 12:21 AM

only had 4h of sleep last night as I needed to see an orchestra and have after-orchestra drinks while watching the EURO2012. then I had to be in work before 6am :(

kookaburra1701 06-19-12 01:18 AM

My commute today sucked because I had to drive in...first time since beginning of April. I knew cycling in gave me a mental boost before my shift but I didn't realize how much until I didn't have it. :(

FreddyV 06-19-12 01:58 AM

My commute was alright. I've been out of commuting for one and a half years, but today was a nice day. Decided to ride the bike to work and it felt good.

fletchh 06-19-12 04:36 AM

Cloudy morning, but no precipitation and warm at 68f (20c). This the gradual warming that we are supposed to get, but as long as there is cloud cover, it will be very gradual.

essiemyra 06-19-12 05:23 AM

I saw an unusual sight last evening on my commute home. I pass a horse farm when I take the long way home, and there was a plume of dust over the horse corral and I looked to see what was causing this and I saw a horse lying on the ground with its feet in the air rolling around. I did not know horses acted as such.

Anyway my commute in this am was very nice, a long sleeve shirt was needed this morning so cool temps and mostly cloudy, eventually the clouds will burn off and it will warm to a nice temp today.

vtjim 06-19-12 05:55 AM

64F/18C. A little bit humid. A couple of impatient cagers were out and about but no big deal. One got a bit of a death glare until I realized it was an older woman. :o

Horses roll all the time, it was a plot point in CS Lewis' The Horse and His Boy even. They especially love to do this right after you've finished giving them a bath or really thorough grooming.

Vojnomir 06-19-12 07:14 AM

72 degrees and sticky. Some text-driver tried to right turn me into the Underworld but other than that it was all bunnies and sunshine along the riverside.

sternzeit 06-19-12 07:22 AM

In a word....windy. Sustained winds @20 with gusts up to 30. It will be a tailwind on the way home.

tarwheel 06-19-12 10:55 AM

Warm and humid this morning with temperature about 70 F. We are supposed to have our first 90+ day of June as it's been unusually cool here lately. That apparently is ending with a bang, with forecasts calling for highs in the 90s for the foreseeable future. Needless to say, I'll be taking it easy until acclimated to the heat.

caloso 06-19-12 11:12 AM

Drove to work this morning as I have a meeting in Oakland this afternoon. But, I stashed my bike in the van and if the meeting ends on time I'll have time to make a Mt. Diablo ascent. So life is good! :)

wphamilton 06-19-12 11:23 AM

Having overslept, I took the more direct, heavy traffic surface road route. Although it knocked 5-8 minutes off my normal commute time it didn't keep me from being a few minutes late. Too many stoplights.

essiemyra 06-19-12 12:43 PM

kookaburra, thank-you for the information, you learn something new everyday!

Allycat24 06-19-12 12:48 PM

Late start this morning - not usually a problem, but when I got to work, someone had locked the locker room door from the inside and the guards couldn't find a key to open the door. At least I have a backup shower available in the building across the street but I wasted 20 minutes with all the running around trying to find someone to open the locked door. Going down there in a few minutes to check again.
