cool and devoid of the humidity this early morning. been getting into work by 5am so missing sunrise but the stars and moon are in full effect. makes me want to listen to an astronomy podcast. loving the lack of rain to boot!

fletchh 08-14-12 04:32 AM

A good ride in and light sprinkle at 74f (23c). Nothing got wet, and that is good as it is supposed to rain most of the day. I have had at least one drenching day for each of the last 3 weeks.

dcb23 08-14-12 05:53 AM

I got soaked coming in, but it was a warm soaking.

Interesting site in the elevator this morning on the way out: A guy gets in with an FBI hat, badge...and a bag of bullets.

vtjim 08-14-12 05:56 AM

63F/17C and pleasant. Light traffic. We got a break from the heat and humidity, finally.

Took the first ride yesterday on my newest commuter bike, a Gunnar Sport. All went well, and it should be a great bike for commuting since it has room for larger tires and mounts for fenders and racks. However, I rode my other commuter bike today because I haven't had time to install fenders on the Gunnar yet and the forecasters are calling for a 30-40% chance of afternoon storms. That turned out to be a problem because my other bike started having shifting problems on the way to work this morning, with chain jumping between gears on both the crank and the cassette. I've never had that problem before, but assume it is a cable issue. Hopefully I'll be able to make it home this afternoon without calling my wife for a rescue.

dramiscram 08-14-12 07:21 AM

Nice ride in. sunny and cool.

alexaschwanden 08-14-12 09:27 AM

Sunny weather around 70 degrees.

noisebeam 08-14-12 09:41 AM

I measured the temp of the water in my water bottle when I got home yesterday at 4pm and it was 117F. I used a calibrated thermometer. Despite the warmth of the water it was better than none for the last few miles home. It started at 32F packed with ice cubes when I left work.

The high temp was only 115F, but I suspect the water gets hotter from sun and the heat radiating from the 167F pavement.

HardyWeinberg 08-14-12 09:45 AM

55F and sunny. Been riding the LHT, too much cargo for a shoulder bag.

Ouch! How long is your commute? I've been wondering if I could deal with the predicted hundred + degree days forecast for Thursday and Friday this week.

11.2mi home.

Ns1 08-14-12 11:16 AM

Been pushing it in the morning. Avg speed this morning was 12.5mph...up from <10mph when I first started commuting.

Air in tires + angry industrial music = faster commute

Bluish Green 08-14-12 11:23 AM

This morning, I had to stop and wait 7 minutes (!) for a freight train, but it turned out okay. The delay ate into the 15-20 minute cushion I give myself to cool down and dress at work before I start, but I still made it and was at my desk working at 9am. And... I had my third best rolling time ever on a morning commute. Must have been the rest I got waiting on that train that gave me energy for the last 2 miles or something.

Anyways, it was nice weather, and the train delay was not a big deal.

I went on a very difficult ride this weekend, 340 kms and 5000+m of climbing. It took 17 hours.

I took a few days off to let my legs heal, and today on the way in I felt insanely strong. I was flying, got to work in 38 minutes without even trying. Takes me 45 most days.

First commute on drop bars this morning! Finished the conversion project this morning just as it was time to roll out. Had some issues getting the indexed shifting on my Ultegra bar end shifters sorted, but all is good now. I'm digging the new setup so far, although it's going to take some getting used to. Easily felt one gear faster than I used to be with my trekking bars. Drops were surprisingly comfortable.

Looking forward to some good miles heading home!

cccorlew 08-14-12 02:35 PM

I commuted on my new commuter bike to a meeting in the next town. 30 mile round trip, but 2000 feet of climbing with it all in the middle. I was thrilled to have really low gears. Even with the 100 degree return trip, life is good!

And let me post my bike, just because I finally managed to get the fenders on around the disc brakes and I am darn proud of my non-mechanical self.

Got my AirZound installed yesterday. The commute in was nice and quiet this morning, so I'm glad I didn't have an opportunity to blast it. :p

There was a patch of fog right over the plant where I work, enough that it started fogging my glasses a bit the last quarter mile or so.

E.S. 08-14-12 03:36 PM

Cold! I should have worn something more than a t-shirt this morning. The sun is coming up later and later every week :(

moxell1 08-14-12 03:59 PM

Short. Got a flat a block from the house and I was running late so jumped in the car (fail). But......provided the perfect excuse to order the slicks and tubes for my Trek 800 and ditch the knobbies.

BassNotBass 08-14-12 09:38 PM

Today I had one of the best commutes that I've had in a long time. On the way home I was feeling really wired (exceptional day at work) and decided to really hammer it home on my crappy Huffy MTB. Got to a long stretch of road with light after light at the intersection of every city block knowing that if I kept up with traffic, I'd hit all of the lights while they were green. Somewhere in the middle I noticed the car in the next lane to the left of me pace me for about a block. I looked over and saw the rough looking dude in the passenger seat roll down the window of the hooptie. I was expecting the usual derogatory remark but instead he yelled, "Yo bubba... 34mph... rock on" (followed by an arm pump enshrouded with prison quality tattoos). I was sucking wind hard but still had an ear to ear grin.

bgilchrist 08-14-12 09:43 PM

Good show.

Mine was better than expected. Got to work sooner, so the crosswind had less effect than I anticipated. Now let's just home the forecasted downpour doesn't materialize tomorrow.

BassNotBass 08-14-12 09:46 PM

That's purdy... really like the discs.

M.R.Serecka 08-15-12 01:50 AM

about 72 degrees and muggy humid enough to catch.
I absolutely cannot physically stand this level of yuck.

The ride it self was good, yet, unnoteworthy. about 17 minutes for roughly 3.8 miles straight commute with no extra miles thrown in despite having had a half hour till my train comes.

Early early ride in this morning...bonus is deserted streets and smooth sailing ahead.

fletchh 08-15-12 04:26 AM

It was very nice ride in with partly cloudy skies at 69f (21c). The sliver of the moon was very pretty, and every now and then as the clouds would move I would catch a glimpse of the stars in the early morning sky. The 2nd week of august is traditionally my transition back to darkness in the morning, and I have not been disappointed.

making 08-15-12 04:26 AM

This morning was a bit chilly at first, but it is suppose to warm up a bit, to 88F I think. It was not the quite pleasant ride most morning rides are. Lots of traffic, had to dodge a couple of drivers not paying attention, I actually checked my headlight a couple of times to make sure it was on, (I knew it was but I could not figure out why else they would be driving like that.) Anyway, I am at work and eating a nice warm thermos of oatmeal and cup of coffee I brought in. I think it is the first day of school in this area, bet that is why the craziness driving.

FalconRider54 08-15-12 04:55 AM

Yesterday's morning commute was 11 miles in the rain. Heavy downpour right after leaving home, then steady rain for the balance. Ride home was into the wind, but a sunny, pleasant ride.

aquateen 08-15-12 05:10 AM

great ride in. got here super early, gotta work on my timing a bit. prepared for a very rainy commute on the way home. brought lots of trash bags along with my usual gear.

vtjim 08-15-12 05:49 AM

66F/19C and sunny. 70% chance of rain today so I packed the gear just in case.
