I just Ordered This Front Rack For One Of My Commuters

I ordered this Basil Memories front cargo rack today. I'm trying to increase the "Fred-ness" of my bike and I thought this rack with a Wald basket bolted to it would do the job. My LBS ordered it for me. Cost is $55.00, which is just about the same as the online price with shipping. It is rated for 33 pounds, so I think it will work just fine for me.

I have to admit that I've never felt the need for a front rack with basket...though being able to ride to a further store with a better selection of beer to get a six pack is appealing!

I was going to say that I think the Wald baskets by themselves are pretty sturdy

+1

Every basket they sell comes with mounting hardware, no other rack is needed. It's been that way for at least 30 years now, back when I bought my first Wald baskets.

I recently mounted a Soma Mini Front Rack( https://www.somafab.com/archives/product/mini-front-rack ) and Wald basket to my Bridgestone XO-2. While it's not as sturdy as a porteur rack, Soma told me it can carry 20 pounds safely. I've used it to transport flats of strawberries home from the produce stand, carried extra gallons of water on long rides, carried my camping supplies, etc.

I should have done that a long time ago.

I already have a Wald basket on the bike, but it seemed to sway a bit the other night with what I considered to be a fairly light load. I'm sure it would be okay, but a front porteur rack suddenly appeals to me.

It's funny though, 25 years ago I wouldn't have been caught dead with a basket on my bike. Now, I find them extremely handy and I really don't care what people think. I guess that's one of the good things about getting older.

I put a $20 U.S.-made Wald basket on my errand bike. Never had it sway, but I'm not aiming for 33 pounds on a bike with this geometry.

My Salsa Casseroll came with a front rack but I rarely use it. I initially left it off to save weight but eventually installed it for the rare occasions when I need to carry a package to the post office. Personally I don't like the way my bikes handle when loading weight on the front, either the handlebars or the racks, and I also don't like not being able to see my front tire. Maybe it's just a matter of getting used to it. I also have a Nitto M-12 front rack that I'm currently not using but plan to install on my touring bike when built up.

2 bungie cords and you are good to go for pizza runs also. I like being able to see the pizza box.

Let us know how it works out.

I have a VO Portuer rack that sits in the closet. It looks nice (beautiful, in fact) but since mine gets a lot of sway even with really light loads. Heavier loads have enough sway that it attempts to steer the bike unless I am heading straight at a decent clip.

Might have saved me a little over the CETMA 5-rail I bought. Oops.

I looked at those and thought about it until I ran across these. Hopefully it will work out.

If you want to increase your Fred Factor, I suggest strapping a milk crate on that bad boy, not a Wald basket.

A pizza box is easier on the Wald though.

Riding with a pizza strapped in front = high Fred Factor
