Long distance travel

Has anyone attempted to travel by bike (i.e. 300+ miles across states) in the US? Is that even possible/feasible/safe?

Really tempted to do it since google map even gives you a local route =)

It's not only possible, it's damned fun.

I'm gonna do a 300 mile tour through the Texas Hill Country next weekend.

Pro Tip: Google Maps is not in my top 3 route selection choices, although I do sometimes take a look at road/shoulder width on a given section via Street View.

Of course it is. Look into "race across America."

Where are you? There are a number of recreational rides of that distance. RAGBRAI in Iowa is one of the most well known.

Just to further the discussion, not too many people ride 300 miles on-stop.

You have a couple of options. "Loaded" touring is where you take gear to camp and possibly cook. "Credit card" (or unloaded) touring, you plan your trip so you spend nights with friends, hosts, or in hostels or motels. CC is obviously lighter than loaded, giving you the chance to rider further, faster.

Depending on terrain, a bike tourist can usually average 30-50 miles a day loaded, and 1/3-1/2 more unloaded.
