its only a bad thing when said commuter is a guy wearing girl's jeans, a "vintage" shirt, and riding a god awful rattle canned multi colored ss/fg while puffing a parly.

....otherwise known as hipsters.....AKA "i am not a hipster, even though i dress and act like one, but by renouncing hipsterdom I am therefore special and unique, and too hip and cool to be categorized".......

Pretty girl says "I ride my bike to get where I need to go. And I enjoy the ride. So..."

She's much hipper than I am, but that's exactly the same reason I ride my bike to work. I love it.

LOL, so true. I really think a lot of people I see daily ride because it's hip. They only ride on nice days too so they can show off their tattoos (and their skinny a**cracks) and be cool. On rainy/cold days I see very few cyclists during my commute, including a few regulars. On a nice day the above types are all over the place.

Yes it is a good thing, because, finally, it's hip to be square.

Whats with the hostility? Does it really matter what jeans someone is wearing? They are on a bike. The more people on bikes and out of cars is a great thing. If someone does it because they think its hip, whatever, it got them in the saddle.

That's what I was thinking, also.

I'm not hip, just ask my twenty-something kids. But I smile anytime I see someone using a bike on a regular basis.

Yea, your telling me! I have been single for most of the 10 or more years I have been car free! Not so cool to cycle in this city I gather.

I think it's going to be a long while before bike commuting is hip in my area.

As to what people wear when commuting, it doesn't matter to me.

Some people may think i look like a mushroom-headed tool.

Haha, see that was funny.

ianstew: it was more that it was the first comment and there are a lot of people who get really bent out of shape about "hipsters" and a lot of the anger is about prescribed motives with little truth to the people they are actually describing. I'll give you credit for setting up mechanicalron for the assist though.

Yep, I think it would be a good thing if our city had hipsters, between myself and another woman cyclist, we seem to be the only commuting cyclists (that I've viewed) trying to set a fashion statement, then the BMX'er crowd tries to set the tone for the rest of the city.

The only issue i have with said neon rattle can ss/fx hipsters is that they run red lights, ride on the wrong side, dont have breaks, dont use lights at night thats not to say all ss/fx riders but if you live in LA and maybe other places you would know the type but i wear skinny jeans and a vintage T and dress well and have my bike looking..... cool but i have the vintage cool although i could use a good powder coating just to have a fresh paint job but the paint would cost more than my bike :/.

However i feel it is the healthiest trend in a long time more excersise for young people whats bad about that

Bicycle commuting is cool in some places now, but certainly not everywhere. It takes a lot more character to be a commuter in southern cities like Houston or Atlanta than it does to cycle in Portland or Seattle or Chicago. If you're a commuter in Seattle, you're almost so normal you're boring; even the mayor rides to work sometimes. If you live in Houston and you're seen riding a bike at 7:00 AM on a Monday, you're risking social censure; people will assume you're destitute or a DUI. Decent people don't ride bikes for utilitarian purposes in Baptist regions.

I find this quite funny, if you mean tighter/slim/skinny jeans.

Everywhere else I've been in the world, refers to looser jeans as "American" jeans, however, you guys refer to slim jeans as "girls jeans." I think you've seen too many Miller Lite commercials or can't fit in slim-cut jeans?
