Is it a bad thing when commuting is hip?

It really doesn't matter what someone else chooses to wear when they ride or why they choose to ride. Honestly, who really cares? and I've ridden in tight jeans because I like tight jeans, but these days I choose knickers cos they don't wear out as fast. Anyway, I've met a lot of similar looking ppl at the bicycle co-op I used to volunteer at in L.A. and they were actually really nice, friendly ppl. Some ppl like to hate on roadies in full kit but almost every roadie I've ever talked to on the road has been really friendly to me. Maybe we should all drop our commuter elitism and be more like the hipsters and roadies now.
also, I don't ride in the rain very often. Sometimes, but where I'm from it doesn't rain very often, it's always clear and sunny, so it's kind of a downer when it does rain. Now that I'm in Korea...I hear it's gotta be humid, hot, and rainy as hell come summer time but I want to continue riding so I'm looking into getting some appropriate clothes for this climate.

I find this quite funny, if you mean tighter/slim/skinny jeans.
Everywhere else I've been in the world, refers to looser jeans as "American" jeans, however, you guys refer to slim jeans as "girls jeans." I think you've seen too many Miller Lite commercials or can't fit in slim-cut jeans?

Actually, Germany is much closer to the US in style than the rest of the continent (Lederhosen exempted). I do find the whole American anti-slim jeans rhetoric quite humorous. Actually, in Sweden (and Stockholm, in particular) the men wear the tightest jeans I have seen in the west.

Jeans too skinny & Jeans too loose both look equally stupid.
I cycle in black shorts (knee length) and a skins top + hoody and a massive bag so certainly not hip, but to be honest Im too busy minding cars, busses and all the hazards to be looking at what ppl are wearing. Btw London, England 4am start 4pm finish I see every kind of commuter.

my issue with 'hipsters' isnt the style of dress;
its the fact that the sense of fashion and 'hip' also leads them to ride without brakes and to thus blow through stop signs.
Which makes cyclists in general look bad, and creates dangerous situations when I meet them at intersections. The large number of 'custom' fixie advertisements these days does worry me a little...
to be fair, I also have similar issue with automobiles who prioritize fashion over practical function and safety (see SUVs)

Does anyone remember when JNCO's were popular? In middle school I dreamed of having back pockets on my jeans big enough to fit cereal boxes like all the cool kids.

While I agree, a quick trip over to the SS/FG or Roadie sub-forums is all I need to come running back to the commuting section. It's intolerable over there.

Pause the Video at 1:15, The guy is riding a SRAM S80 wheel on a bike with bullhorns.......really? I am all for using good equipment and I have even ridden my cosmic Carbones once or twice for a commute when I needed to jump on my road-bike, but DAMN that is some nice wheelage for commuting.....

Yes, it does. I don't want to look at some guys's skinny buttcrack.

Also, what pisses me off is when I coast down the bridge I have to watch out for wobbling fixters trying to keep their bike under control. I had few close ones with those characters.

Laf...This thread amuses me.
I tried so-called "skinny jeans" once. Couldn't get them over my thighs. People with actual leg muscles can't wear them.

I don't care if commuting is hip. The more people riding, the better. If they look silly (subjective), it doesn't affect me, so who cares? Smile and wave.

Fewer cars and more bikes makes my commute easier and safer.
Now, if there were more healthy, young female commuters, that would be even better.

Too bad this image doesn't cover all the ridiculous modifications to otherwise nice bike and the refusal of mainstream except for Apple products. Other than that it's pretty much on the spot.

It's a good thing and I don't care what they ride or how. I'd rather dodge a thousand rookies riding for a different reason than me, than one raging cager.
