When she just wont go anymore

I had a question regarding my 1988 Peugeot drivetrain. When its worn out and needs new gears and cranks what options will I have to replacing them ? I assume its made to French specs although mine is. Canadian and I dot know much about parts but don't the components need to be made compatible to French specs ? And what about shifters ? Mine currently has 6 gears. In back all OG components

Some companies (like Velo Orange and Phil Wood) make French-spec parts, for a price. Check around the C&V forum -- guys there occasionally unload used French parts with life left in 'em.

Ask C&V. By 1988 a lot of French stuff was no longer being made to French specs, so it may not actually be very hard to replace the parts.

I had an '87 Peugeot and though the seat post was sort of an oddball size, the bottom bracket was english threaded, and most of the drivetrain was pretty standard stuff.

What model?

It's an 88 Marseille I belive that's the way its spelled half the name is scraped off. Yeah the seat post is a 24 diameter not 25 or 27 been thinking of getting a thinner post and using a sleeve but idk . The components are shimmano don't know if that helps

Bikes: Too many to list here!

Learn from the Oracle of Bikes: https://sheldonbrown.com/velos.html

That should explain the whole thing, including how likely your bike is to have French standard parts.

Wouldn't worry about it really. My guess is that it also has an English threaded bottom bracket which means you have tons of choices for replacing the bottom bracket, crankset, etc.

Even it were French threaded there are still choices. For that matter, just service it regularly and you won't have to worry about it.

I suppose there's a remote chance it's got one of those Helicomatic hubs but it's probably too new for that. Can't really find cassettes for those too easily. In that case, a bad cassette means getting a new rear wheel.

I've had a couple Peugeots. One from the 70's and one from the 80's. Don't lose the seat posts but other than that, you'll be fine.

On my 88 Peugeot I put a Fuji BB. It fit just fine and worked better then the OEM. I also put a 7 speed freewheel on it.

I have an old Avoriaz that's in the same boat. Collecting dust in my basement with a destroyed chain, rings, and cassette. LBS said they can't fix it (easily, anyway) but some specialty places might be able to. I keep threatening to turn it into a SS. Not sure I'm hip enough for a fixie. I can't fit into those jeans they're required to wear.

LBSes sometimes lack creativity when it comes to repairs.

Peugeots often used Nervar or Sronglight cranks which may have an uncommon BCD. Nevertheless, compatible chainrings can be found on Ebay now and then or you can replace the whole crankset.

More than likely the freewheel has English threading so you can replace it with whatever Shimano model you like.
