Awesome! And let me echo that there's no shame in getting a lift home in this weather. I usually take the 15 to 20 mile scenic route home, but once the heat index hit 100 it's been the short 5 mile ride.
I'm going to second the suggestion to find a local coop as well. You can learn a lot and find an inexpensive ride there. I was really lucky with my first Craigslist bike, a very nice and nicely maintained hybrid that took good care of me while I learned what I was doing. My second bike was a money pit. Still have it, and actually love it now, but had I known what I was doing then, never would have purchased.

woot! Congrats on your first commute! When I was struggling to commute, I discovered that biking home and then biking to work the next morning was easier than doing the round trip on the same day. Extra rest and sleep provided decent recovery.
Two thumbs up for the Lezyne Pressure Drive frame pump. Get the one that has higher pressure (110 psi) so that it can be used on your N+1 road bike :-)
