Bright and bright blinking lights have helped me with salmon. It doesn't happen very often, but when it does the guy that's lit up like a Christmas tree you can see from outer space gets noticed a lot sooner than the ninja salmon. That gives them the upper hand as far as making the first move, but it also makes it harder for them to hold their line too. This works really well for preteen kids who go from trying to annoy the grown up by riding right at them to complaining about how "that's not fair". Wattage in the cottage is your friend in cases like this, especially when it's on both the handlebars and your helmet.

Any chance you could video and share the next encounter? I would love to see it. Unless he turns around and runs you down: I don't want that to happen, much less to see it.

I wonder how far he rides, like is he just too lazy to cross the road to get on his own side. What a dip ****.

Beginning to wonder if many of you ride around with the bike statutes in your pockets? Seem to spend more time worrying about who is violating bicycle laws than riding your bikes and arriving at a destination. Some of the things you are concerned/upset about: really? Is it your responsibility to stop and reprimand bicyclists? Why don't some of you join a bicycle advocacy organization, provide guest speaking at schools and in the communities where you are so offended by the apparent lack of bicycle etiquette.

If I violate one of the most sacred/holy/thou shalt nots of bicycling--please don't bother me.

OP, if possible, try changing your route. I bet a small deviation will completely alleviate your problem.

I thought he must be just going a short distance at first, but this last time happened 3 miles up hwy 101 from the northern most part of where I normally see him. He was headed the same direction, same accoutrements, so the spread has to be at least 5 miles.

Unless I parachute in with my umbrella a la Mary Poppins, there's no other way to get to my place. In my part of town, everything connects to 101 directly, with no other connecting streets if I approach from the south. The only road that runs parallel to the highway long enough to spit me out north of my place would add 10 miles to my commute.

It's easier to tell stupid people off. Though I don't bother because most people are really self-righteous and have a hard time listening to reason.

The fact that you have devoted time out of your life you will never get back to threatening dopey redneck style direct action in a forum as a first-course-of-action, makes this point concisely. Just hint: Some states, like FL for instance, have laws about using noise to assault a cyclist or animal. And no, I'm not going to look it up for you.

Advice to anyone who gets tweaked about something so inconsequential, petty and trivial--Get a hobby today, and leave your house 10 minutes early tomorrow.
Might also want to consider driving a car, thats the vehicle more appropriate to that mindset :)

OP, get a Nite Rider Mi-Newt Cordless 600. Set it on the strobe setting when expecting the salmon to turn the corner and I think...eventually he'll get the message. Or stop him and let him know he's causing genuine danger to you and several other people, cyclists et all who use that particular MUP at that time in the morning. It's not that big a deal. He'll either respond well or not. Either way you've done your part. The rest is up to him.

If it happens at almost the same time, I do suggest calling the police about it. The type of response depends on the attitude of the officer assigned to the call, but it also depends on what you say to the call-taker. Articulate that this cyclist is putting your safety at risk by forcing you to dodge, possibly out into traffic. Make it clear that the salmon takes the centre of the bike lane and makes no effort to allow you to safely pass. Don't focus on "he's breaking the law so you have to stop him!" - the cops aren't there to enforce every single law in existence, they're there to maintain the safety of the public. Hit the right key phrases and chances are you will get a favourable response. At the very least, make a request for extra patrols in the area.

Also, use the non-emergency number and call before you leave - don't call 911 after the cyclist has already passed you.

This sounds like a good option. I was trying to think of a solution while reading these posts; this seems most like what I might consider.

The wrong-way bicyclist is not only endangering others but himself with this reckless, selfish riding. I have to wonder how long someone can ride so dangerously without a crash happening. Hang in there, and I hope the problem resolves (with no crashes) soon.

No, I really don't have any practical answers. All I could think of was yelling at him, but also doubt he'd listen. As for calling the police, as also previously mentioned, I've been in too many areas where to local PD doesn't give half a rat's unless it's a speed trap or a 'real' crime.

seriously! the OP states an on going problem of an idiot cyclist and half the responses are "educate him", what? it's not my job to educate anyone on this planet, especially the ones possibly putting me in danger. what's next take him to a therapist to discover this guys deep seeded issues with road rules. You realize most of those motorist out there buzzing and honking at you think they're "educating" you right?

OP call the police and lie, tell them this guy forced you off the road and nearly caused you to crash into to something, and it's not the first close call you've had with him. If I had this problem more than once I'd be throwing a full water bottle at the guy's head, but then I'm a 6' guy. and spare me the what the cops would do to me because the other half of the posts seem to elude to do-nothing police. if the responding officer does nothing, go to the supervisor and ask why they don't take public safety seriously. I don't think that would be a problem because most police officers I know love to educate people.
