Bike buying thread. . .

I need help getting a bike. It however should be from this dealer, preferably through this program. Low cost would be great (definitely no 1000 bikes). If anyone knows of a better selection in Atlanta that would be fine too if there are better commuting bikes for what I want to do.

I am looking for something for quick trips to grocery store (less than a mile away), and perhaps to local bars/restaurants in the area. Would also like to take it to campus some days.

I don't know anything about bikes. The last two I bought (almost ten years ago) were both mountain bikes that I only ever used around town (and got stolen both times I took them out in public anywhere not the store - :O).

Dunno about that program, but the price of the Via 2 ain't bad at all. Add a rack and panniers or baskets and you've got exactly what you need.

Just a program that gets you some dollars off a new bike; not sure if it really is worth going through them or rather spending money on another model. I'm 5'9; only says X-Large for that Via - would that be an issue?

I don't plan on going in, pointing to a bike and putting money down. I would however like some preknowledge ahead of time. Surely that's not a bad thing.

Get a Surly, and if that is too expensive, get something from BikesDirect, and if that's too expensive, get something used from Craigslist. Avoid big box stores like the plague. If you have no idea what you are doing, go to a bike shop. That about covers it.

Yeah, XL would've been too big. And looks like they've updated their site, as the Via 2 is no longer there.

The Escape 2 would not be a bad choice, all sizes except XL are shown to be in stock, but got no idea of their quantity on hand.

Yea that site changes quite a bit. I was hoping not to use them directly (even though the Fuji bikes through the university program go through them anyway). It's also tough finding pro reviews for bikes.

I don't get it. 10 years ago the first thing I did when I decided to start riding a motorcycle was hit up rider forums for buying tips and what to watch out for. Not sure what the issue is here about getting some information about rides/what to look for before speaking to a salesman and then being able to have an (internet) informed discussion.
