FINALLY! A 5 for 5 commute week!!!!
Summer is the hardest time for me to commute - too many excuses to drive so I can do something else. So the dark and wet part of the year is the best - except when I have to travel 50% of my time...
Started commuting and riding in April 2011. Lots of miles in since then, but never a 5 for 5 commute week.
Well, a few weeks ago it was gonna happen - but then the mother of all flats and a busted pump had me walk back home 2-1/2 miles. 4-1/2 out of 5.
The next week, high winds, rain, and icky muggy temps. 1/5
Last week, had to take my new pup to the vet. 4/5
This week, finally 5/5!!!
Tomorrow the bike goes in for a tuneup and hopefully a fix on the crank. I HOPE that since it is the slow season, they can turn my bike in a day. I want to get 3/3 next week.
And its funny - I will ride in true crappy weather to and from work, but I can't make myself go on a Saturday fun ride in the rain.....And I DO have fun riding to and from work in the rain, or ice, or fog, or whatever (as long as it isn't muggy....).
Five for five. Celebrated with a good Rogue Newport Ale, and a Rogue Farmstead Fresh Hop, and a Rogue Dirtoir. Evening off from the diet....

- With three solid right hooks I managed to make it out of
- Nice high winds and pouring rain on one day
- Dense fog on two days
- And tonite, MY RIGHT CRANK CAME LOOSE A MILE FROM HOME!!!!

Congratulations!
I just got my first 5 of 5 last week, which was a goal for me, too.
Miles, PR time, average speed, etc., are nice goals, but for me it is number of commute days that really drives me. It's the sense of accomplishment.
I am the same way you are about weekend rides - if I had to depend on them for exercise, I would be in trouble. The commute to and from work locks me in no matter what the weather, and the miles are starting to pile up that way.
Keep up the good work!

a 5 for 5 week is really tough to achieve for me. It seems that I always have a function that requires no bike one day a week
this week I'll be at work Sat/Sun so, I'll get a 5 for 7 week that way, but the 5 for 5 eludes me
due to a lot of travel.

I have been doing the 5 for 5 for almost a year now. Just recently I slowed it down and drove a few days. Also, another trick is to have more than one bike too. I have been where I am ready to go, and the bike I have in my hand has a flat. No problem, I grabbed another one, and rolled out. In fact, even if nothing is wrong, out of the 5 days I am commuting, I at least ride 3 different bikes if not more.. I got 10 riding bikes, and love riding each one. The Litespeed is not for commuting..

Congrats on the 5 for 5.
I would say since early August, I missed only 5 days riding, four for work trips and one for surf. Today would have been interesting if it was a work day, as it has been raining all night, and I really do not like to ride in the rain. Even with fenders on my bike now, just the whole visibility and safety thing makes it not really worth it for me. Riding when it is wet, no problem. Riding in a steady rain or heavier, not for me. Since I live in Southern California, there won't be that many days it affects me, so more 5 for 5's are on the horizon for me.

There was another cool piece of my 5/5 today - my odometer turned 4000 miles on the ride. Now that is over 18months, and is some thousand or more short due to different reasons, but a milestone nevertheless. Should end up with another 5-600 by year's end, and hoping for 5K for 2013. We'll see. Ride on!

Congrats, David!
I can't remember if I pulled a 5-for-5 last year, but it was great when I did one this year. Things actually seem to get easier when you set up exclusively for bike commuting and don't have to worry about switching things around to drive the next day.

Good job! You must have taken some of mine, as I got zero for 5 last week. The forecast for tomorrow (high winds/rain) isn't looking too good either. I'm hoping for Tuesday. Wednesday I have the day off but I have a dentist appointment in Monmouth, so I like to ride to that. 15 miles one way. That would probably be it for next week. Bleah, lousy time of year to be slacking off.
Let us know if you make it tomorrow. I'm sure the forecast is exaggerated!

Sadly, the bike is in the shop. Didn't know what the issue was that caused the crank to come loose, so I just took it in yesterday morning and left it off for that determination/repair and went ahead and ordered a full tuneup. Hope to pick it up on the way home, so I can ride Tuesday and Wednesday. Even if exaggerated, the forecast is nasty nasty nasty with the winds and heavy rain, and I don't like riding with all the deadfall that comes down through a couple of stretches of the route. On the plus side, I still think I will make it to Friday before putting gas in the rig, which will be a month since I filled up.
This has given me the ability to let myself consider n+1. Have found some great bikes. And in my shopping, I think we came across a great idea for wedding gifts for my son and his bride - a couple of bikes suited for their lifestyle in Portland.
Worst part of the shopping is I found a couple of really neat city bikes. No need whatsoever, not practical up here in the hilly part of town, but my wife and I sure like em...

Feels good doesn't it.....not having to fuel up for a month. That's a pretty good incentive to keep commuting through the winter.
Last year, I commuted on and off and this year started slow. Then mid-July, I get more serious and now look forward to the couple hours of commuting each day.
Yaa... I also started thinking about N+1. Wanting a dedicated commuter that actually fits.
Best of luck....

Today was as good a day as I could have picked to have my bike in the shop. WINDY. Heavy rain. Plain nasty.
But no damage to the crank, just wasn't torqued tight enough to begin with I suppose. So back in the saddle tomorrow - very excited about it.

Keep it up! My wife and I are down to one car so no driving for me I just hope we don't have too much snow this year.

I wimped out. Decided to drive to check out the pre-Thanksgiving sale at the LBS today. They have a minimum 10% off all bikes, except I didn't see any worthy drop bar commuters.
Have fun on the commute, supposed to be wet, again.

**** ... i was hoping for my first 5-for-5-week this week.
however, I'm going to Switzerland on Friday evening so I can't ride the full commute on Friday
We're working here from 1am to 5am on Friday evening/Saturday morning.

Nice, I put the few bucks I save on gas and vehicle wear into a fund for bike gear lust every day I commute by bike. If I make three days in a row I give myself a little bonus and 5 for 5 weeks get an additional bonus. That little extra motivation is really nice for those mornings you wake up and just don't really feel like getting on the bike for whatever reason.

My bonus of late has been watching the bathroom scale. And I get to allow myself an occasional beer. Maybe more than just an occasional one...or two....
