I've read the threads on long, grueling commutes. Each one makes me cringe. It is time for me to confess. My commute is less than 4 miles each way!

There, I've said it. I'm embarrassed but the facts is the facts. I still get to ride my bike every day, and if I push hard I can get my heart pumping and legs burning - only for a little while but that's better than nothing. Sometimes I take the long way home. The one that goes through my fave watering hole.

Okay, who else needs to come out of the closet? Who has the shortest bike commute among us?

My shortest distance to work is about 5.5 miles, so I don't win. A coworker lives about 2 miles from work, and commutes by bike regularly. So maybe he sets the standard until someone posts a shorter one . . .

I suspect it won't take to long to find someone under a mile.

My shortest route is 2.5 miles one way, I usually take the 3 mile route. Of late, have been trying to take the 5 mile route back. Depends on whether someone scheduled a meeting till 5:30!

But if my route was longer, I doubt I would be able to commute on a bike regularly - at least, not at my current stage in life.

I commute about a mile to school every day... but about 1/3 of that is over a bridge with a very annoying headwind. It seems to always be a headwind in both directions...

Right now I walk to work because it's so close that it's easier to walk than to lock and unlock my bike.

Ride everywhere else though.

My boss bike commutes every day, for about 500m each way... Mine is 8.5km.

I'm right about 2 miles, or 3.2 km. I can take a little longer route if I want to, but I usually don't. Takes me about 15 minutes with traffic at a leisurely pace.

It's 6 feet from my bicycle to my desk at home. Down from 9 miles to my last job.

In my humble old opinion, all commutes on bikes are good. Even if it is just one mile!! The fact of the matter is, we are "doing it". That is what counts. Having fun, saving money, and getting exercise. Can't get any better than that..

My commute is 18 miles round trip. However, on good days, and when I start early, I make it longer. I take the long way to work, plus I ride different bikes each day, I always get a rush.

So, props to all commuters, short, medium and long, and may we continue commuting for a long, long time!

for the last year it has been .4 miles one way, I ride instead of walk so I have more time at home on my lunch hour.

My round trip is about 9 miles (different routes coming and going - morning is 3.75 miles). Sometimes I wish it was a little longer, but it does get me out on the bike most days. Like you, I find it's enough to feel like I got some exercise.

No worries...

With my shop being at home I only commute to the Bike Co-op a few times a week and that is either 2 or 8 km depending on which location I am heading to... when I ride out to the main shop it is a 110 km round trip although this is not practical in the winter.

I still aim to get in a ride every day regardless of whatever is going on... have been so busy tooling up the shop that I have not had time for much else of late.

Mine is 3 miles each way. If my mom still rode here bike to work it would be 1/4 mile each way.

I've been unemployed since April, so I'm at about 15-20 steps in socks and flannel pants at the moment.
My riding of late has been short 8-10 round trips for groceries, riding to the local park, or to the gym.

If memory serves you once had a pretty robust commute, at least on some days. Sounds like your frame building mentor has officially kicked you out of the nest as you are expanding your home shop.
