Poll: What do you with Bonus Commute time?
Today, on my way home, my wife called and said she was taking my daughter out to Panera for an early dinner. That meant I had at least an extra half hour, maybe more.
I immediately took a left turn and headed for the hills. An extra half hour meant that I got to get in some hill climbing and take a more scenic route home.
What do you do when you get bonus time on your commute home?

My commute is 32mi r/t with about 1000' of climbing each way. I might vary the route to change things up a little bit, but I don't usually add any miles in there on the way home.

My shortest commute is only 4-5 miles home (the longer loops are in the 12-16 range for the most part, but can be longer if I really feel like it and there's everything in between), so I'll often add distance if the day is nice and I don't have anything pressing waiting at home (like a book with only 20 pages left or something).

I'm like himespau - my direct route is 5 miles, but my long route that I take most days is 12 miles and I frequently add another 3 mile loop to that. In decent weather if I get home and my wife hasn't beaten me home with her carpool, I'll add another 3 to 6 mile loop.

I'm always impressed with people that ride real miles on their normal commute. Mine's only 3 miles one way. And I live in So Cal. I would have to ride a century commute or something to impress people who commute in real weather.

Most often, the "extra time" I've got is on my commute TO work, rather than the ride home. This generally happens if I wake up early or if my morning routine takes a little less time than usual. When there's time to spare in the AM, I will usually stop for a bagel and a V-8 (I live in New Yawk) and enjoy a leisurely breakfast outdoors.

It's so rare I get alone time at home I'll usually ride faster to get there. Gives me a few minutes in the workshop without feeling guilty that I'm neglecting the family.

Yeah, I like Manhattan and the other boros, too, but I'm on Long Island, about an hour away. My commute is past a hundred-year-old orphanage, an historical farmhouse from the 1600's, and a bunch of duck ponds. There is a Starbucks on the way to work, but I much prefer Dugan's, a country-style deli that was a big part of my childhood.
