Panniers that hold 12" LPs?

Hey all,

I have been searching for a while for a pannier or pannier set that will comfortably hold LPs (W 12"+ x H 12"+). Anytime I find a bag that has dimensions that meet these requirements they almost always seem to either be split in to multiple compartments or have some sort of taper on the bottom edge of the bag which would prevent records from sitting evenly on the bottom of the bag.

I was hoping someone has either found a solution to this same issue, or maybe someone just has a gigantic pannier that they know would be adequate. Waterproof would be preferential, but at this point I would take anything that meets the size requirements.

Thanks so much in advance!

Adam

Google Home Made Panniers, look at the images. That will give you plenty of food for thought.
Not too tough to make once you find the Box or the bin you want.

https://www.jandd.com/ These guys make their own, so you may get them to customize the size for you

Good luck

I haven't tried, but I think Otlieb Bike Packers are big enough to hold LPs. I wouldn't want to carry more than half a dozen to a dozen at once, though -- remember how heavy those things are?

Agh! I remember finding these during one of my major searching sessions and getting really excited, and them being unavailable or only in that unfortunate print, bummer.

Thanks, I'm going to check these out! Vinyl is a heavy hobby haha.

EDIT: They look promising, but unfortunately out of the price range.

I wouldn't give up on this yet. It might be your best shot after you figure out how to seal the records before putting them in the crate.

The print actually isn't that bad in person. I was a bit worried when I ordered them.

By the way, these close but do not seal as far as weather proofing goes.

Cheers,
Charles

Whatever you do, you'll probably want 12" square reinforcements on the outside to keep from bending or crushing the records.

Good call, yeah I usually carry one or two of the 12" cardboard mailer stiffeners in my bag, too.

---

The new front-runner is the Jandd Commuter Pannier, there is more than enough room for records (verified via email with customer service), and a laptop to boot. A little pricey, but since it meets almost all of my requests I think I may go with it.

https://www.jandd.com/detail.asp?PRODUCT_ID=FCP

Thanks everyone, any other suggestions definitely welcome, I won't be ordering for a week or two...

Banjo Brothers Market pannier will be way cheaper (in price) than the Jandd. Put the LPs in a plastic bag for extra protection from the elements.

There are DJ cases for the LP's then you have the case keeping them un bent and shredded

then you put the case in a pannier.

Ortlieb has a rack top zip closed bag 12x16 I think..

Jannd bags are excellent quality. I have had a trunk bag for 8 years of commuting and panniers for 5 of those years and they are beat up, but perfectly functional. The zippers work perfectly, only one rip in the cordura from a crash at 20 mph. Very high quality stuff.

Jannd also makes a market pannier that will fit LP's perfectly. Of course anytime you are transporting delicate things proper packaging is necessary.

Bikes: Yes

I have an old set of panniers that would be period-correct for carrying LPs if you're worried about avoiding anachronisms, but alas it has a tapered bottom.

12" LPs is redundant.

Probably the last new 12" record I bought was the 33rpm single of Run DMC's 'Walk This Way' in 1987 (?)(!!!!!!) Time flies!!

I had panniers at the time but never put an album in one. Wouldn't have fit, I'm sure.
I don't miss vinyl. Still have a Technics turntable in case I change my mind.

Sunlite Grocery Getters will do the job. Not water proof, but plenty big enough.

My Knog Franks Dog pannier will easily hold LPs. It is spec'ed to hold a 15" Macbook Pro and is plenty big for 12" all around.

]

And while not completely waterproof, it comes with a pull out cover. I've never used it so I can't vouch for its watertightness.

Haha, right you are, however after adding the words 'vinyl' and 'record' to so many search queries of 'panniers' I found that being as explicit as possible about the fact you are referencing musical vinyl records was helpful!

---

I just wanted to say thanks again to everyone for the information, I'm glad the next time someone has this same (albeit uncommon) question this thread will be here as a resource for them.

Bikes: Yes, I have bikes.

Sierratradingpost.com has two Racktime bags that will fit your records. One would attach to a rear rack laying on top (the WallIt) and the other is a computer/office bag (the WorkIt) that is a pannier. The WorkIt has a rigid side and has a rain cover built in. Racktime is manufactured by Ortlieb. I own both and they are very well made and sturdy.

12" Singles are not 12" Long Playing Albums. They are both 12" though.

Bought my last ones in the 80's at the Ramstein Audio and Photo Club:
Whitney Houston - I Wanna Dance with Someone (a capella) One of her best, ever.
Pointer Sisters - Jump
Lionel Ritchie - All Night Long

Still have them, but listen to all my music via digital players now.
