Toxicity

Many air fresheners employ carcinogens, volatile organic compounds and known toxins such as phthalate esters in their formulas. A Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) study of 13 common household air fresheners found that most of the surveyed products contain chemicals that can aggravate asthma and affect reproductive development. The NRDC called for more rigorous supervision of the manufacturers and their products, which are widely assumed to be safe:
The study assessed scented sprays, gels, and plug-in air fresheners. Independent lab testing confirmed the presence of phthalates, or hormone-disrupting chemicals that may pose a particular health risk to babies and young children, in 12 of the 14 products—including those marked 'all natural.' None of the products had these chemicals listed on their labels.[SUP][4][/SUP]

Very interesting. I've never heard of toxic air fresheners until you brought it up. Your post inspired me to google the subject. I was able find numerous pro and con air freshener articles. Here's a link the the most balanced article I could find:

https://home.howstuffworks.com/home-i...er-dangers.htm

In short, the US Product Safety Commission and Environmental Protection Agency have yet to rule on air freshener toxicity. The Natural Resource Defense Counsel and several university studies have concluded that many/most commercial air fresheners contain chemicals that should be avoided (phthalates). The end of the following article contains a list of air fresheners that don't contain phthalates:

https://www.nrdc.org/health/home/airf...fresheners.pdf

Finally, there are natural alternatives to commercial air fresheners. Baking soda, coffee grounds, and lemon peels are three suggestions.

Back to the original topic. I've got a similar situation to the OP. I hang dry my commuting clothes in the corner of my work cubical and don't want offending odors upsetting my wall-mates. I'll spend the next few days looking into air freshener toxicity and try to come up with a reasonable solution.

Given this new information I'll revise my previous advice:

If you opt to hang dry your commuting clothes in the office and are concerned with offensive olfactory perception and want to reduce exposure to toxic chemicals, seven words: baking soda, coffee grounds, or lemon peels.

As a member of the custodial staff, at my place of employment---I can vouch for #2, #1 seems to be holding true as well.

Since I park my bike in the hallway inside at work, I hang my clothes on the bike to dry out. Oddly enough, since I might have to trust my life to my helmet some day, I store my helmet at my desk where it won't get knocked over or whacked.

I wear jeans, an undershirt, t shirt and hoodie to work, get to work, hang my hoodie in the break room and change my shirt and undershirt, the old ones go in the bag, wear the new ones home. I do more laundry this way though. Might look into a moisture wicking shirt and just hang it in the bathroom or something. I'm only riding 5 miles so my hoodie doesn't get sweat. When it warms up I'll lose the hoodie and replace it with a bright green construction vest instead

Where do you suggest that the cyclist place the baking soda, coffee grounds, or lemon peels to neutralize the offending sweaty clothes aroma?

Just scatter them on the floor.

I use a clothes hanger for my merino sweater, hanging from the handlebars. The jacket goes on the main coat hanger, rain pants hang over the bike seat until they are dry... the only problem I am still trying to figure out is the liners (shorts). I am not going to expose those to my co-workers, so they are often a bit damp when I put them on again later.

No shower but lucky enough to have an office. I hang everything on the back of the door. Since I have a lot of people in and out all day I'm paranoid about smells. It seems as long as clothes hang spread out on hangers they don't smell - wadded up they do (I've polled co-workers). +1 for Merino. I thought it smelled wooly when wet but no one else seems to think so

I would be careful with the noone complained yet as not everybody react the same way. Someone could be bothered without saying. Better to prevent than correct or ask people but even then some could be too polite. Better safe than sorry.

I'm amazed at the thought of using compost on your bike clothes to "eliminate" smell. Why use anything at all? If stink is a problem, for gawdsakes bring an extra set with you to ride home in. Coffee grounds and lemon peels? The driving public thinks we're weird enough. Why add to their arsenal?

I actually do use coffee grounds, but only in my coffee pot ehrn I'm brewing coffee which often happens a few times a day. So my office normally smells of coffee.

if you're too weak to speak up for yourself, you deserve to suffer.

I suppose the suggestion is to place the sweaty clothes in the coffee pot and sweaty bike shorts in place of a coffee filter to hold the grounds while brewing.

but then the smell of riding by a starbucks would attract all the coffee connoisseurs who'd think it was some new gourmet blend

took a pic of the back of my door, figured no one else would get it but you all

plastic bag and bring them home to launder every day. on the way in carry a return set. so that's 2 sets per day.

I had my own office and could hang all my "cycling" clothes after changing. Not shown is the underwear on a different hanger out of sight

I like to take my sweaty bike shorts and drape them over my boss's face.
