1000 Bike Commute Days
I just wanted to share that I reached a nice personal milestone today, Friday January 18th.
Today marks my 1000th Bike Commute Day (2000 trips!).
My commute is between Center City Philadelphia and Malvern, PA. For the past 6 years I've been doing a multi-modal commute using a folding bike (actually I'm on my third folding bike) and train (Amtrak mostly, SEPTA occasionally).
I'm a numbers guy so here are some stats:
9554 total miles biked
53000 miles NOT DRIVEN (53 miles round trip from Center City)
981 round trips by Folding Bike (8.5 miles) and train
38 trips biked home (32 miles) via Schulkill River Trail (1216 miles total)
9 flat tires
1 crash (due to road conditions)
382,160 calories burned (109 pounds of fat!)
58.5 Vertical Miles (over 10x Mt. Everest) Climbed on Cedar Hollow Road (315 ft rise per day)
Coldest commute - 7 degrees F with a nice 15 MPH headwind

This really puts into perspecive what an impact you have on the world and what you've accomplished. All I can add is that this is fantastic!

Congratulations!
It got me thinking that I must be well over 1,000 consecutive days. The last time I didn't bike to work was one day in July 2006.

Sure thing, I guess. It will shave about 4 or 5 miles off the full ride home, and be almost 100% flat. Although I do enjoy the hills getting to and through Valley Forge Park before hitting the trail at Betzwood.

The bikes "worked out" fine but the first two just broke perhaps a little prematurely.
Bike 1: Downtube IX NS, it lasted 3 years and 3579 miles, the frame cracked near the seatpost entry.
Bike 2: Downtube 8H, it lasted 2.5 years and 3871 miles, the frame cracked in the same way near the seatpost entry.
Bike 3: Tern P7i (bought in July 2012)... so far 825 miles.

Spectacular! The way I see it, 53,000 miles not driven at .57 a mile is $30,210. Subtract the cost of trains and parking and buy yourself a new bike... or 10

Very nice accomplishment.
And I'm quite certain that all your friends and family think you're nuts!
