Help me write an email to my boss about providing an office bike rack

A lot of you know the story, I was told to lock my bike up to a handicap post that is mounted in dirt when I asked if I could bring it into the office

Help me by providing persuasive arguments as to why we should have a bike parking of some kind. I know a lot of you have some good arguments!

Bullet points will be fine. No need to summarize or anything

Thanks

how many people ride their bikes to your work? how much does a cheap used bike rack cost? can you go in with the other employees and buy the bike rack yourselves?

that doesn't read like it would help the OP. the way i understand it, it sounds like the employer has to be willing to let bikes in the office. it sounds like its designed to prevent the building owner from banning bikes from inside the building. unless i mis-understood it.

That's what I do.

If I asked the building manager, he'd probably say it needs to be parked in the rack out front. But no one actually stops me from wheeling it into my office.

Why beat around the bush? Find a nice way to tell them you will resign if they don't.

Look at it this way. You will quickly find out one of 2 things. They value you and you will obtain proper bike parking (Win, Win) Or you will be looking for a new job at a company that values you more and has better bike parking. Maybe not a win right away but in the long run probably the right thing to do anyway.

or dont.... good luck

Don't forget to tell them that they should thank you for saving the world and the least they could do is provide you a space for your bike in your corner office.

Enough of the fanciful (and borderline inappropriate language).

OP, if I recall correctly, your office is in like and industrial park setting, correct? Your boss may not be willing to let you bring the bike inside, but installing a bike rack may not be a viable option either. First, the building may be leased and so any 'improvements' or 'modifications' would have to be approved by the property management company. Secondly, unless you're the equivalent of a franchise player and your resigning spells doom for the company, the odds are not good if you expect them to pony up the dough to install a rack just for your benefit.

Depending on the nature of your business, one option to possibly explore would be to see if the company has any plans of parking a large van, box truck, or 28' semi trailer out near the curb as a billboard (very popular here in Redneckistan) and if so, you could always ask permission to lock your bike in that.

Take initiative , dig a hole, put a pipe with a loop to lock to in a bunch of concrete, in the hole.
it's New York, make it shaped like Jimmy Hoffa's cement boots.

This is a good idea. I would ask the boss if it's ok to replant the handicapped post in a block of concrete with a steel bar loop that you can lock to. Surely if you do the work, he won't really mind?

Dear (boss),

I would like to thank you for allowing me to lock my bicycle up to the handicapped parking spot. However I feel this isn't the best place for long term parking. I realize hardly anyone uses that space for parking but eventually this could lead to complications (find better description, embellish).

Would it be possible to get a bicycle rack installed next to X. A bicycle rack could encourage others to bicycle commute as well. (Go to the other thread and find more reasons to install a bicycle rack)

Your truly, (yada yada yada)

Look around both inside and outside to find suitable places. Talk to your immediate supervisors about it. Try to get them on your side. Try not to push them to the other side of the argument. If denied wait a while and put in your request again. Sometimes persistence will win.

Good luck.

Obviously all situations are different but here is my $0.02.

Ask in person, but know what you are asking for first. If you are asking to have a new bike rack installed know what kind and what the cost is, bring a cut sheet with a picture. It is much easier to say no in an e-mail.

We moved to an office complex a while back and I lost my indoor parking but there is a rack out front of the new place. I do not like to make my babies stay out in the rain and snow, so I asked the office down stairs if I could park in a corner of the lobby on snow and rain days. They said no problem.

It helps that this is a very accepting town for bikes and that the bike I park inside is something of a classic cruiser.

Or that he offers to bring his vehicle inside to share his interior space, AND clean up after it, and the boss has the audacity to say "no" to this and to bike racks?

What fantasy world do you live in where you can up and move from your job when you're not happy with the bicycle parking? . . . what if you frickin' like your job? . . . biking is important to me, but you don't bike for 8+ hours a day. . . usually : )
