Downtown disney not bicycle friendly!!!!!!!!!!

So we visited downtown disney in orlando and decided to bring the bikes. The hotel was only two miles from downtown disney and the weather would make it a nice short commute to downtown disney. I called downtown disney and spoke to the security office and asked where we could lock up the bikes. We were told there are bike racks but none could be found...so we locked it up to a light pole away from the crowds. When we return..we were approached by two disney guards that claimed they were going to cut my locks and impound the bikes!!!! I made a smart remarks "you were going to using an angle grinder on my 12mm chain"?

As we rode away to leave we were approached by two more guards on bikes for the same thing!!! Boo on Disney for not being bike friendly

So did any of these 'friendly' security guards have any suggestions as to where you COULD lock up your bikes?

Apparently YOUR security isn't what they're hired to look after!

Not surprising considering that "The happiest place on earth" lost the parking revenue on you. Your bikes are nothing more than visual trash, "bad show" as they call it, which means employees are required look fot it and to remove it as quickly as possible.

OTOH their long time internal motto is "Always Exceed the guest expectations". So if they still believe that they really should have covered secure bike parking and your bike shoudl be wiped down, the chain lubed, and tires pumped up when you come out. Although at this point I suppose a simple rack would be exceeding your expectations.

Let's face it despite their family image, Disney has never been part of the solution. The happiest place on earth is on a bike.

When I said I called and asked where the bike racks were located, none could be found upon arrival. I sure if I didn't have my chain lock they would have snipped a cable lock without blinking an eye!!

Maybe there are racks in the parking lot? Did you ask anyone when you arrived?

Still, impounding the bikes is pretty extreme.

Interesting, I saw this and immediately thought you meant the one adjacent to disneyland not disneyworld, I did see bike racks near the one at disneyland but by near I mean in the parking lot of the closest disney hotel, not sure if members of the public would be welcome to lock up there. Side note, the bike racks were shaped like mickey heads.

You're leaving us hanging with your story. When the people approached you, did you ask where the bike racks were?

Nice looking bikes, by the way.

Especially since it didn't happen to the OP's bikes.

from the Website above:
"While you can rent bikes and surreys at many locations throughout the Walt Disney World resort, they are intended for use on specific resort paths, and guests are not encouraged to use these as a form of transportation to the parks...Each of these resorts have specially constructed paths for bikes and pedestrians that take riders on a scenic route around the resort area, but do not lead off resort property onto the Walt Disney World road system. These bike rentals are meant for leisure, not transportation.

Walt Disney World is not designed with cyclists in mind. The road system was constructed with the sole purpose of getting people in and out of the parks in vehicles. Remember, even though Walt Disney World is the size of San Francisco, Disney owns all that land, and the roads were constructed specifically as a Disney super highway, not as if they were roads in a regular city with a mix of cars, bikes and people.

There are no bike paths on the roads at Walt Disney World, and with thousands of buses and cars being routed to their destinations every day, it’s not a safe environment to cycle. Most of the drivers at Walt Disney World are more concerned with getting to Splash Mountain than watching the road for unexpected cyclists."

Disney is a highly manicured place (for better or worse) and I'm not surprised that they balk at bikes being locked in random places.

Not saying that the OP's bikes really looked out of place but I get the impression that if the Disney landscaping crews could get each blade of grass to stand a certain way, they would do it.

The bike with pink fenders and flower decals looks like it was made for Minnie Mouse.

I'm just loving that quote from the Disney website. Now, if we could just achieve that mix...

Been to Disneyland and D'world several times. And my feeling has always been that they dumb down the fun so morons will pay a huge sum to wait in line for hours only to get on rides that last a few seconds. Part of that dumbing down must include velo-castration. They can't have some guests riding bikes and getting from ride-to-ride or ride-to-restaurant efficiently. No. All plebes must walk.

Yeah, the imagined world of the future with bikes is more along the lines of Blade Runner... Not Disney.

Apparently bikes don't fit into the image of Fantasy land, Frontier land or even Tom Sawyer's Island...

Ha, someday they will have a bike ride that pulls you along on a chain that can only be activated by pushing on pedals. What a concept..

The quote was not from a Disney web site. Anything related to commuting here?

Ditto... LOL!

It's outrageous that Disney security saw fit to harass and intimade these obvious hoodlums on two wheeled terror machines (I mean, look at the pictures--those bikes are the very essence of fear and intimidation!)... Oh brother... I've come to a point inmy life where I won't go where I'm really not wanted or welcomed (unless I have to). So, if dowtown disney doesn't want my business because of my bicycle, I'll spend my leisure/dining money somewhere else. Simple really.
