No dynamo on a commuter wheelset, no care. They're only 20 euro nowadays.

Lol at those wheels.

Not unless they allowed me to swap for store credit towards bike(s) and gear. After all, the tax on those puppies is roughly what I paid for my bike (NOS) 5 years ago.

Just like new car giveaways, I figure if I were to win it I could sell it and buy something I actually wanted.

Bikes: Bianchi San Remo - set up as a utility bike, Peter Mooney Road bike, Peter Mooney commute bike,Dahon Folder,Schwinn Paramount Tandem

Either of those two wheelsets would be a downgrade for my commuter - no dynamo, and neither one would be as reliable as the wheels that I have now.
Front - Schmidt Dyno Hub, rear - Phil Wood, both 36 spoke.

Bikes: A bunch of old steel bikes + an ICE trike

It would be very hard to give up my drum brakes and front dyno. They'd look pretty ugly on my 40 year old bike too. I wonder how they would stand up to my tendency to fly over speed bumps.

Wow, a commuter snobs at the roadie world? Usually that's the other way around.

Lol at that post.

I love that anglophones say "road" bike when most germophones say "race" bike.

I think that about sums it up.

Road/race bikes make poor commuters or hacked together commuters in a best case scenario.

some of us ride many bikes. I would love either set on my roadie. I commute with the "race" bike at least once every two weeks just for fun, I also take the MTB...same reason. Hell I'd ride my wife's townie cruiser if didn't have all of her crap hanging on it.

I can't speak for everyone, but for me it is because "race" has more of a contextual meaning than it does literal towards build or geometry, lending a meaning more valued in the act than in the object.

Bikes: Yes

I've got eight bikes, two of which are road bikes. I've raced on five of the eight bikes, but one of the three I haven't raced on is one of the road bikes.

"O body swayed to music, O brightening glance,
How can we know the dancer from the dance?"

Or to put it another way...

"What is the sound of one hand clapping?"

i just think it's the lack of precision inherent in the english language, which can be both good and bad compared to german.

What's so precise about calling a bike that's not used for racing a 'race bike'? It's definitely an old way of looking at bicycles, and plenty of Americans still do the same thing, but the enthusiast segments in both countries know better, and understand it's the act that makes a bike 'racing.'

I'd like either set of wheels, but I'm not willing to turn my FB page into a commercial zone just to get a shot at 'em.

um, because they're only used for races in europe, kinda the point, eh?

fwiw, we also have expedition, trekking, commuting, urban and touring bikes in the common vernacular. however, most with drops are racing as the other classes wouldn't go with drops.

Of course that is not true, nor is it true there are no expedition, trekking, commuting, urban or touring bikes with drop bars, so I take it you want to just be ridiculous.

I've raced several times on the same bike I used for commuting today and most days from April through November. it makes a great commuter, - because it's fun !

Nevertheless, I probably wouldn't use those carbon jobbies as my everyday wheels though you can bet I'd take them out for a spin or two even if I did end up selling them.

On the other hand if you can't have a dynamo, a swirl lip generator is the next best thing.

And that is, like you said, where the good of precision meets the bad of semantical error (which oddly is a lack of precision). Race bikes aren't only used for races (I rode my supersix to lunch yesterday) however for anyone lesser to call their bike a race bike borders on the line of pretentious, only because again, it brings with it contextual meaning. "Road" humbles the statement and the rider, which in effect raises the value of "race" as it is separated from common reference. It holds a value of a more elite class of athlete.

At the end of that day, road is what the bikes are on, and race is what some bikes are made for, but neither describe anything less precise-- the emphasis is just shifted to two different areas of interest. While race fails to define use accurately, road fails to define intent accurately.
