Very interesting and fun to read thread.

On my rural commute where other cyclists are quite rare I will wave or say hi. But yesterday I went for a 130 kms ride on the bike trail with some friends and we didn't wave anybody because you can all guess what people were doing on the bike trail...

It make me think of something similar, there's a constructiuon zone on my commute and for the last 5-6 weeks I chat every morning with the flag lady while we wait for our turn to pass thru the construction zone. We're now friends, I happen to know her parents and my father was her 6th grade teacher 35 years ago... this never happen in a car...

Funny you bring that up. I always acknowledge the flaggers at road construction areas, and will say hi or something if I'm stopped at the head of the line. I drive a convertible so I'm more "out there" a lot of the time, and can't hide behind rolled up windows and the like. I figure it's just good manners.

Hello, everyone.I am not good at social intercourse, but I'd like to make a lot of friends. For the first meeting,if a person looks kind,I'll greet him or give a nod. When we know each other well,I can talk a lot.

For some reason I prioritize. If I'm overtaking I usually say hello or low hand wave, otherwise nothing for oncoming. Same goes while boating or motorcycle riding. Seems like first thing in the morning I'm getting waves from everyone, but later in the day they diminish. What really gets me as odd is that I can be six lanes away on a busy roadway and I have someone heading the other direction (on a motorcycle) waving at me. Sorry (not to jralbert in relation to his comment, but generally speaking), but that goes beyond the whole connection "with others that have chosen to share a path with me." When I ride the motorcycle I'm usually out for 200-600 miles and can come across a lot of other "bikes." That gets old to me. However, overtaking another cyclist on our lightly used MUP is different to me. YMMV.
