Wise move as far as I am concerned. While regular exercise will improve your body's ability to fight off infection, once you're sick, I say, give your body the opportunity to use its reserves to fight the sickness and not have to split the reserves between exercising and fighting sickness.

My riding ceased this weekend also because it was my 15 year reunion from college. All my classmates were like you have lost so much weight is that from biking ?! It was awesome experience to show up at reunion 35-40lbs less than I when I graduated. :D

Congratulations on your loss!!! (Always wanted to say that!)

Cold and wet ride in, 4C/39F and drizzly. Not enough rain to run off my glasses so I ended up being blinded by the headlights in the spots on my glasses. However, after about 20-25 minutes, the rain let off and I was able to wipe off my glasses and keep them spot-free.

A warmer 58F this morning, but windy and humid so actually felt colder than yesterday's 50. Lots of leaves on the road and trail. I've learned to pay attention to leaves especially when it rains

Windy, big headwind in the morning but last night I had a big tailwind to get back home.

Lovely weather we've been having. No problems at all this morning. Last Thursday also not much to speak of, except for this one impatient arse who decided to pass both me and a car waiting patiently behind me. At least he gave me plenty of room.

Some family schedule changes mean I *could* ride every day of the week now, if I wanted to. But I'm not sure I could handle 155 miles of commuting during the week. I might start doing Wednesdays in addition to Tues/Thurs. Haven't decided yet.

The joke was on me this morning. I check the weather widget on my phone, it say's a pleasant 72°, clear, a little unexpected but not unusual so I cheerfully dress light. It's cool starting out but it always is, and my habit is such a rush from bed to the road that I don't really notice much until I've gone a couple of miles and gotten more awake. But then I wasn't really warming up. 72 and I'm still cold? I considered, maybe it's age, poor circulation, just not putting out enough effort to power up some warmth. Depressing. So at my desk finally I checked the weather again, checked the phone - and it hadn't updated the temperature since Sept 13! :roflmao2: 60°. I'm sure there is a lesson in there somewhere ...

You might want to consider instead M/W/F so as to give your legs a rest in between rather than 3 days in a row.

Two work days this week, zero commutes.

I couldn't yesterday, because I had to get home ASAP after work. Today I was packed and ready to go, but the stomach bug my GF apparently has caught is keeping her almost bedridden so she asked me if I could take her son to HS this morning.

I won't lie ... I'm disappointed, because today's the last day of the National Bike Challenge, as well as the end of the month and I'm going to miss my monthly goal.

So I think tonight when I get home I'm gonna go for a ride, ideally 16.1 miles in order to reach an even 1,600 miles in the NBC. Hoping to commute tomorrow.

I had a nice commute home yesterday. I was just cruising at 30-33 km/h on the flats before a pedestrian bridge over the river and I was then passed like I have never been before, like I was standing still. I was on my fully loaded LHT without kid but he just flew by on a Caad10 (I think). I caught up with him and held on over the bridge and the following km or so, but he beat me to a light and got through it and I lost him. I could have worked harder to get to the light but I did not think either of us would make it. I was flat out impressed and even said out loud I have never been passed like that. I felt happy I kept with him as long as I did.

I got my new tights from Eastbay, they are Fierce Yellow; and damn they are bright. Coupled with my high vis green/yellow Under Armour shirt I may be visible from an airplane.

I stopped and screwed in a gas cap and closed the flap for a woman in traffic; it is easy to slid up next to a car and close it up. Traffic is still pretty thick at a few choke points and I have enjoyed taking full advantage of weaving through the line up.

Absolutely ideal conditions. Calm, cool, bright blue skies. Perfection.

I have an external HDD I take to work on Fridays to run a server backup (keep it offsite) and don't really want to carry that in my trunk bag. Plus I always have a lot of crap from the week to carry home on Fridays. And then I'm usually bringing stuff in on Mondays.

I got some spokes and basic tools. A shop popped the cassette off for me at no charge cause I didn't have the money to buy the tools or pay them for spokes, installation, and any trueing. I got it got the spokes on ok (missed the pattern on one, such a rookie!) I got the rim pretty straight I didn't mess with too many spokes just the two that were broke and one that felt like it was going to fall out. I brought it back into the shop to ask them to take a quick look and found out that all the spokes on the drive side were way way too tight. Weird cause it's a new bike this year, I don't I didn't touch them. Oh well dude was cool and did a quick fix best he could for next to no cost and showed me explained to me the issue. Cheapest education I ever paid for. Needless to say I missed my commute 2 days, but tomorrow is going to be nice! Thanks for the advice.

I call them training rides. Bring all clothes at once.

First commute since I tore my ACL May 17 (surgery July 17). I've been riding around the neighborhood the past few weekends up to around 10 or 11 miles. My commute this morning was a bit more than 13 miles and it went fairly well, although my knee started to complain a bit around mile 11-12. Luckily, I hit a red light and got to rest for a minute and after that the last mile felt fine. Anyhow; the weather is cooling down nicely, so I'm back to commuting just in time and very glad to be active again (no running until about November and debating on when to try some non-technical single track on the MTB).

Extended my commute last night to stop at the grocery store, which meant jumping on the bike path. On my way back through I stopped to help a young lady change a flat. Poor girl was getting all worked up because her tire kept slipping back onto the rim as she was removing it. Then as she was putting the new one on, she was about to bust the valve stem off (missed the hole in the rim) which I was nice enough to point out before it happened.

Needed to drive today to make a final move from our old location, and drop the keys off at the realtor's office 45 miles away. Seemed like a good day to be on the bike though, hoping tomorrow will be the same.

It was supposed to rain this morning, but I rode anyway. Initial light drizzle relented and ride was comfy.

Took the long way home (10 miles vs. 7), since the weather turned glorious. It was heavenly.

Averaged 17.8 mph, mixed terrain and a couple stop lights.

Really rough day and rough commute in. Nothing really went too wrong but just lots of little things. My brand new light went flying off my bike, it's kind of scratched up but it still works very well. Almost got hit by a taxi that turned into the crosswalk at Brooklyn Bridge. Then almost got flattened by another taxi at Broadway and Park Pl after he came to stop and then suddenly zoomed into a marked median to pick up some tourists hailing a cab. I get to my destination and guess what? I left my lens cap on my helmet camera. Yeah not my ride.

On the way home I watched a hipster zoom past me on the path leading to the Manhattan bridge. He tried to stop when he saw the tour bus coming down Canal but his brakes made a horrible screeching noise. Kinda like they were rubbing on the tire. Fortunately the bus saw him and slowed down. That's exactly why I never fly through that intersection a lot of traffic just flies around that turn coming off the bridge.

I saw a car fly through a red light and come within feet of striking a cyclist at the end of the protected Manhattan Bridge bike path in Brooklyn. The light for the car was and had been solid red yet he didn't care he went right through it. The car then made an illegal u-turn and then some guy walked into the middle of the road and started yelling at the driver. I noticed the car appeared to have some damage on it's front bumper. I seriously considered calling the police. However, three things stopped me.
1. I was right by the projects at night.
2. Something about the car and especially the guy yelling at made me really uneasy. My gut reaction was to get away as fast as possible.
3. The last time I called 911 in NYC about a dangerous driver the operator talked me out of having the cops come. Even if they did previous experience and knowledge told me they wouldn't give a ****.

My decision not to call the cops was vindicated about a mile down the road by an NYPD cruiser, van and an NYFD ambulance blocking the oncoming lane which I happened to be in. I assumed that there must have been some kind of an emergency however none of the vehicles had their lights going. The way the van was parked made it almost impossible to see oncoming traffic. I carefully went around them only to see the EMTS leaning against the ambulance talking to two cops. I'm glad that the ambulance wasn't occupied cause with how they were parked they just might need it. I get emergencies happen and they often have to block bike lanes and travel lanes. However they should always have the lights going and if the cops aren't busy they should direct traffic around the blockage. If they have time to lean against the ambulance they have time to direct traffic. #visonzero :twitchy: I'll check tomorrow if there was enough light for my helmet camera to have captured that roadblock. It really was quite something.

Sorry for the ran just needed to blow off some steam! Here's hoping for a better commute tomorrow. :o

Epic!

Light rains on the way in, stopped to get my rain gear on. Really pleasant temps.

I joined the forums in late September 2010 when I started commuting to my job by bike...and I haven't stoppped since. So somewhere around today marks four straight years of commuting. (I have a short 3.5 miles each way from my apartment on the far side of Capitol Hill to the area of DC near the Lincoln Memorial.)

Similar here, 8C/45F, headwind, gray with spray in the air almost the whole way, was constantly wiping the wetness off my glasses so I didn't get blinded by oncoming headlights sparkling in the drops on my glasses. I didn't push the pace but I think I made decent time.

Calm, overcast & 13C this morning, traffic was reasonable. As of this morning I have exactly 600km on my single-speed fat bike, about half of that by commuting.

Cheers

It felt good to finally ride this week! It was 59F and super foggy. I dug out an old small blinky to go with my headlight on solid. So two lights in the front and two in the back. I could not believe some people were out driving with no lights on. I eventually took my glasses off and put them in my jersey because they were covered with water from the fog. Instantly improved the ride when i could see better.

I think I need to re-learn how to dress for cool weather every fall. 3C/37F this morning, and while my legs were okay with just shorts, my fingers were quite cold under my thin gloves.

Rode my old Bianchi road bike for only the second time this year (you know you have more bikes than you need when...). This past spring, I took it off the hook in the garage to give it a once over, and noticed the rear wheel was a bit wobbly. Removed the wheel to give the cones an adjustment, and noticed the axle was bent. So, it went back on the hook until I could get it fixed. Rode my fixie on dry days instead. Last week, I finally got around to taking the Bianchi to Sixty Fiver's shop, and he discovered that the axle was actually broken in two, not bent. Either way, it needed replacing. Now it's fixed, and the bike rides better than ever.

It's nice to be back on the old Bianchi. I forgot how much I liked that bike. When I got my fixie last year, it kinda felt like I was a guy who had a gorgeous, elegant wife, but decided to have an affair with a freaky girl with tattoos and body piercings. Now, I'm getting reconciled with the gorgeous wife :).
