2014!! How was your commute today?

It was nice, 40 degrees but pretty clear. It's still dark when I leave the house, but by 5:20 it looked light enough I could have skipped the Blackburn Flea on my helmet. I run the generator powered headlight all the time, but it doesn't always illuminate where I'm looking. It's supposed to be up in the 70s this afternoon. I left my bike in Dallas so I won't be tempted to ride long today and be too tired to ride again Thursday and Friday.

When I left work, it was 6C/43F, pouring rain with a 36kmh/23mph headwind, in other words, cold rain being driven right at me: I wimped out of the long ride home and took the shortcut. Most of the rain forecast for this week was supposed to occur today, I should be fine for the rest of the week, damp perhaps but not cold soaked within 10 minutes.

The rain here has so far cooperated with my commute time. Nothing yesterday. It rained and stormed in the wee hours this morning, but stopped an hour before I had to leave. More is supposed to show up this afternoon though.

The forecast is for a bit of rain everyday until Sunday. I looked outside this morning, no rain but heavy, overcast clouds. Oh well, I'll dress a bit warmer (6C/43F, damp air) and carry my rain gear. Off I went and about 1/4 of the way in to work, there was some spray in the air, no biggie. About 1/2 way, it was lightly showering, ok, fine, I'll be damp when I get in to work. About 3/4 way, it was pouring, I was soaked, my right eye was burning, presumably from road spray being kicked up onto my helmet and rolled into my eye. However, my rain gear was nice and dry, packed in my pannier!!! GRRRRR!!

I tried to beat the rain home yesterday and the rain won. Normally I wouldn't mind but about 1/4 of the way home I realized I'd left my rain jacket at work. With help from a pretty good tailwind I think I broke my ride record - tailwind and fear are a great combination!
This morning it was cooler, 47F and wet with a headwind. Thunderstorms predicted for the ride home. Now that I have two rain jackets at work I have a pretty good chance of being adequately dressed.

Had a decent tailwind last night (rear left), though it was raining. Got me going pretty good on my junky soon-to-be-retired hybrid. Went to hop out of the traffic lane outside the gate since it's usually easier for me to merge over after the traffic burst dies down than trying to jockey for position. Tyre skidded out on the lip of the parking lot entrance (slight lip, done it dozens of times before in even heavier rain at times). Ground my helmet, right elbow and right knee about a foot before stopping. Got up like a pro, walked the yeowch off, remounted my chain and rode home.
Sadly it tore a small pair of holes in my rain pants
This morning it was uberfoggy.

Ames on Monday was nothing but downpour and heavy wind on the way home. I had rain pelting me hard in the face the whole way, so my vision was awful at best, and there are a lot of outlets from the shopping centers, so I had a fun time wrangling the soaked brakes whenever somebody decided they needed to get out of Sam's Club without paying attention to the stop sign. First time I've had to put my shoes in the dryer this year, so there's something.
Yesterday ditched (some of) the rain but kept the wind. My gloves decided to go missing that morning, so I wound up going barehanded in 38F spitting rain, and had to put my hands in the shrinkwrapper oven for a minute to regain feeling. The way back was significantly warmer but still just as wet. My brakes really hate me by now.
Today seems calmer but it's still pretty wet out. I have a longer commute today since I have a lot of errands to run, so I'll get to see how the trails have fared. Probably not well.

13degC/56degF this AM, yesterday PM was even warmer and sunny. The popular bike commuter routes are getting a lot busier.
Warmer, dry weather is bringing out the 'competitive' types. Saw a guy this AM blasting down the hill at Burrard, in full aero tuck, full race kit, super deep V rims, expensive looking bike, etc with his commuter backpack on. lol. awesome.

Today was another great commute; it was rather warm this morning when I started. My son and I also got about a twenty minute late start and that makes a huge difference in cycle traffic along Tenth Ave. I got passed by about 8 people while I go slow over some almost V shaped road-sidewalk transitions and then a few really big bumps that bounce and jar my son pretty hard if I take them with any speed. The thing is we are a lot faster and we had to lolly gag behind all the hipsters on their vintage 10 speeds while they wobbled and talked about whatever hipsters talk about. Kale chips, the newest organic fair trade (insert noun) no one has ever heard of and infertility due to tight pants, I suspect.
So my son agreed we would take the “fast” route today, which meant getting on Broadway heading against rush hour flow for just over 1 km. We went fast and he really enjoyed it asked why we do not always use that road more often. It can be a bit busy and not safe sometimes, but there was not too much traffic today and plenty of room, no drivers seemed to mind.
The rest of the commute was good, but hot. I did get an “Ohh you’re really sweaty today,” from a coworker.
Last night I was tired and was planning a rest; but of course you can not get showed up on the way up a hill. I caught three road riders and there was a commuter behind me. The commuter passed me and then I just paced him at about 15 feet (did not want to make it too easy so I kept him within catching distance) the whole way along with one road rider ahead of him. The second roadie tried hard to keep with us and the third disappeared (must have been a rest day). I did lose the lead roadie when he ran a red light I choose not to run, but caught him at another light he had to stop for.
It is always good for the ego when I keep up with and lose roadies on my LHT, while going uphill. The lead guy was a bit faster, but not by much. Someday I will get a lightweight bike.
@timvan_78 Yeah it has been busy, there would be days I would not see anyone up Cambie and not more than a few on tenth on the daycare run.

Bah. Every year I get more pathetic. Today is the first day this year that I can contribute to this thread. I've become the king of excuses, most bad (working from home 4 days/week doesn't help with the commuting miles, but I'm not riding much otherwise, either).
Today, no excuses. Sunny, 4C this morning (projected 21C this afternoon), hardly any wind. 'Twas a nice ride, but hills were a little tough due to my lack of regular riding. Days like today remind me why I love cycling. Hope to do a lot more of it.

90s and 35mph windstorm I rode, walked and took the bus. I could barely walk the freaking bike without being blown over

So far this week all the rain forecasts have either not materialized or happened in the middle of the night. Another dry ride home yesterday. I was pretty tired after I got home and took a short nap on the couch.
The humidity in the mornings is becoming more noticeable. I notice it the most if I have to stop at an intersection. When the air flow stops, the sweat doesn't evaporate as quickly.

Rode a mile or two from the car mechanic to work. Time for the annual inspection.

I was supposed to have a tailwind home yesterday but the WSW was all W and no S! This morning (of course) straight out of the south right in my face. I don't remember so many days in a row with strong winds consistently over 15mph, but then again I don't remember a lot. Much cooler too this morning, 41F. Still better than snow and ice - that's what I keep saying to myself.

Cross Wind from the east this morning, lot of rain but I like riding in the rain so it's not a problem.
Big hockey game tonight on my way home, I just hope the radio signal will be decent, usually went it rains...

My first bike commute of the week this morning due to rain, thunderstorms, tornadoes, floods, etc. across NC the past 3 days. I actually could have ridden every day as the storms mysteriously vanished during my usual commuting times each day, but there was no way to know for sure ahead of time. My commute is just too long (over an hour each way) to ride during severe weather or the threat of it. I'm not one of those cyclists who will ride under any weather conditions, and definitely draw the line when the forecasts call for severe storms.

I'm just happy that the Flyers finally have a star goalie and a team that doesn't give up.

I know how that feels. And while I don't think that Montreal will win, I won't be rooting for Boston.
Looks like I'll be riding the whole way home tonight. The car needed some serious work done and they had to order parts that won't arrive until tomorrow. I hope I don't aggravate my cold too much; it's the first day of feeling a bit better after 3 days of runny nose, sinus congestion, and fever.
