My Commute - England in the pouring rain - 28-2-2014

This was Fridays commute - 2.15 hours of another cold and rainy commute.

https://youtu.be/uSMUHw9vHxM

The video only summarises the first hour in 5 minutes.
The GoPro battery ran out after the first hour and I wasn't about too change it in the pouring rain.
The rest of the ride was pretty much of the same except in the pitch black.

You can see my route on Strava here

From: 700 Ft. above sea level.

Bikes: Not as many as there were awhile ago.

Made me cold and miserable just watching it.

It is so interesting to see someone else's commute like that. You have some very nice stretches of road along your route, but that one section along the highway made me nervous. It looked like some cars were passing really close to you. Yikes! I love how you can see the front fender doing its job -- at one point little drops of water are popping up over the front edge.

Hi,

That day I rode my Cannondale Super Six. Unfortunately it doesn't have any fenders (mud guards) I can't find any that fit.
We do have the odd nice day here And yes, I am quite fortunate with my location being near Silchester.
You can get a slightly better idea from this video I took on a relatively nice day.

Thanks for the nice comments :-D

I was watching the little rain drops at 1:14 and thought they were jumping up over the fender. I guess I just assumed any commuter in England would be equipped with them

Thank you for the video. It looks like you have a very nice, if somewhat wet, bit of the world to cycle through.

Just out of curiosity, why the long commute ? From your Strava post it looks like you had several options for shorter routes.

I use my commutes too kill two birds with one stone. It's an economical way too get too work but it's also a way too get my miles in without having too do additional rides.
I like too sleep and my mornings in bed are precious thus I get up too late for an extended morning ride. I therefore make up for it in the evening by detouring. Most evenings ill do around 6-20 miles.
This last week was the Strava February 15 where you had too ride 15 hours in one week so I did more miles than normal.

I'd have fenders, but otherwise, looks like a nice commute.

Hehe, I think you might be right regarding any bike built specifically for commuting, eg my Dawes has guards and I do try too ride it when the weather poor but on that day in the AM it was nice so I took a punt and too the Cannondale, Unfortunately it poured down in the evening.

I prefer too take the Cannondale whenever I can as it's much lighter. Fingers crossed the weather here will start too pick up asap.

It is nice mate and during the summer it's even better if you don't mind swallowing a few flies from the swarms buzzing under tress The winter here suck's, it's normally wet and freezing cold. If we are really lucky we might get a bit of fluffy snow but it doesn't take long too turn into slush and then it's wet and miserable again

Role on the summer

You're going to get yourself killed riding on the wrong side of the road like that!

I don't think I ever crossed the white line, Passing and filtering maybe? but always on my side of the road unless it was safe too cross the line. One of the benefits of riding is not having to sit in Ques.

Your weather looks awfully familiar.

Actually I love riding in the rain - just not for two hours.

Lol, after about 60 minutes you become impervious to it, so long as you don't stop and let the rot set in

man oh man, I don't care what the miles are, if it were raining like that I would take the shortest route possible no doubt!

Do you follow any of the many other UK cam commuters like CycleGaz, Traffic Droid, CyclingMikey, etc? Your video is not surprising to me at all, because it seems like the majority of those guys' videos has some type of precipitation happening in them.

Today's commute was not bad! It was dry for a change! :-D

Had a nice white Van give me a wide birth which is a bit unusual around these parts! Shame he nearly took out the oncoming car!

https://youtu.be/qV6o3FxKe_s

And on the same stretch I was overtaken on the wrong side of a traffic island by an impatient driver! Other than that fairly eventless.

In the first one, it was very boneheaded but didn't threaten you or an oncoming car.

I didn't say he threatened me. I said it was a dangerous and stupid overtake which puts motorists at risk. He was speeding and he was over taking into oncoming traffic. He was doing at least 40 mph in a 30 mph zone and the oncoming car was doing at least 30. That's a combined collision speed of 70 mph.
They were about 6 inches apart when they passed. I would say that the oncoming driver was somewhat put at risk.

What if either one had a blow out? or lost control of there vehicle for some other reason, how much margin for error do they have when there 6 inches from each other?

I noticed that your lights have the lit green button on the back and the left one, during the latter parts of the video, has the occasional flash, why was it flashing?
