Moving - time to start commuting!

In two weeks I am moving from Phoenix, AZ to Bloomington, IN. Among the many aspects of this move that I am excited about is the change in commute from about 20 miles each way to 4. Looking forward to building bike commuting into much of a more consistent routine. Oh yeah!

I too am on the cusp of a move that will drastically shorten my bike commute, though I'm staying within the same city. I currently live in the west loop neighborhood of downtown Chicago, but I plan to be moving to the Edgewater neighborhood on the northside of the city sometime this summer. As I work in a suburb immediately north of the city (Evanston), this move will take my one-way commute distance from the current 14.5 miles down to 4.5 miles, which is going to give me loads more time back in my day. It's going to be a welcome change with our first baby due to be born at the end of august.

But it'll feel like 20 miles once you've made it through the last pile of snow next to the bike rack.

I moved and changed jobs in December making my commute go from 12 miles one way to 4. I commute by bike every day now whereas I used to only commute sometimes.

A year and a half ago, I reduced my commute by half (and cut out the need to across a busy interstate highway) and went from occasionally commuting by bike to mostly commuting by bike. I'm now outside a minimum of an hour a day and feel as if this commuting time is a gift whereas before it was a chore, what with all the traffic and angry drivers that I am now (mostly) able to avoid.

All the best for your move. Bloomington is a beautiful town.

The Boilermakers are in West Lafayette, IN.

Bloomington, IN is the home of the Hoosiers.

Back in February I moved and changed jobs. My bike commute went from 6 to 12 miles one way. In addition, I went from having to be in by 8:30/9 to no later than 8:00, so I have to leave about an hour earlier than I used to.

My commute is mostly rural, with low traffic, no stop lights and only a couple of busy road crossings. So far, I'm loving it. I often finding myself leaving even earlier so I can fit some extra miles in on the way to work and/or doing a some extra on the way home.

There are plans for my office to eventually move, putting me closer to 18 miles one way. But that may not be for a while.

Oops, my mistake. I thought you were objecting to the Boilers, confusing Bloomington with West Lafayette.

I have been here in Bloomington for about a month now, becoming quite aware of the Purdue/IU rivalry already. Go Hoo Hoo Hoosiers! Oh well, at least we are all on the bike commuting team! Planning my first commute for tomorrow. Let's get this thing going!
