What type of front brake should I put on?

My bike comes in tomorrow and I'm going to add a front brake, as of now it just has coaster brakes.
Should I add a disc brake? or do i really not need that? I'll be riding a slow 12 mile RT hill-less commute.

Also, is there a gadget that tells me not only average speed and distance covered, but maybe calories burned, etc, too?

A SA Drum brake front hub(+wheel rebuild) (or Shimano's roller brake, also wheel build need a different hub)

can be added to a fork that lacks the mounts that are required for a disc brake ..

still an all weather Brake ..

other than tha t a bolt on caliper . rim brake ..

Disc Brake + also buying a fork + a new wheel will be = to the cost of the bike most likely (or More)..

What type of front brake should I put on?

Most basic cycling computers can do calories.

Also, is there a gadget that tells me not only average speed and distance covered, but maybe calories burned, etc, too? Yes to all, except calories, plus many more bits of different information. Prices range from less than $10 (from China via eBarf) to hundreds of $$$.

Next time,it would help if you stated what bike(so we don't have to search back through your postings). For that SE,the only brake that will bolt on is a caliper(road/side-pull/double-pivot) brake. Anything else will require a new fork and/or wheel rebuild.

Yes, and whatever you'd like the number to be you can probably find one that will give that as the result. I.e. human physiology variations and other factors beyond the control of the cyclometer make it impossible to get accurate data without additional instrumentation.

^^^THIS^^^

I just use the rolling time from the computer and then an online calorie calculator. They vary in calories burnt. You can put in time, avg speed and weight and get a wide range of answers.

I don't pay attention to anything while riding except cadence. It has been a big help in shrinking hills.

??? I've owned probably a dozen. I've never had one that can do calories. Not that I'd care if it did but I haven't seen it. I don't think your concept of "basic" and mine are similar.
