I did that for about a year, but I only had to go to the second floor and it was a folder(I didn't fold it though). For a full size bike, not easy, especially when there are people, doors, etc.

Yea, this client is 3 flights of steep stairs up, there are stairs and more stairs outside as well. Curse that damned place of many non-ramped levels..

You don't really need to wrap your rack or your bike with tape. I once carried my commuter bike all the way up to the 12th floor of my apartment where I live....At another time I also carried my bike for almost 3 kilometers on my shoulder after I had a crash and my front wheel cracked...If you really want to do it then put some pipe insulation on your top tube and wrap it with some athletic tape and then shoulder it.

People are taking my posts and running off on some assumption fueled tangent as of late. A very discouraging development as i enjoy participating here.

Before you said this, I was thinking in my head, "Hey, I recognize that guy from that other post where everyone was ragging on each other."

Um,my Safari's rack is rated for 50lbs. My Safari weighs about 30. Considering the rack is designed to handle a load heavier than the bike, and support it while dealing with the shock of hitting bumps,I don't see how there could be an issue.

@ TransitBiker,as tsl said, the cyclocross method works well. A variation is to put the horn of the saddle on your shoulder instead of the frame. And,unlike some of the ad pics I've seen for that handle, obviously always carry by the non-drive side.

Yeah, people do that. Welcome to bikeforums.net!

You only registered here a few months ago so you might not have noticed that some people just like to debate/argue for the sake of it. After a while you get to know who's who and what's what. You just happened to draw the short straw this time, (and maybe fed into it a bit). I would try to not take it personally.

FWIW I enjoy your contributions and your positive attitude so I'd hate to see you get discouraged from continuing to post.

Yes. As soon as you come to the realization that you are just a dopey american who does everything wrong and resign yourself to that accordingly, your stay on bike forums will be much easer.

I would say it depends on the rack. Some racks don't have the sliding flat mounting stays , but a rigid TIG welded bar that attaches at the brake bolt/fender mount. The original Jim Blackburn racks were set up like this, and using the rack as a "handle" would put far less stress than a tourists double pannier load.
I'd say go for it, add padding and/or bar tape as is comfortable to you.

Nah . . .posting my borish opinions under one name is enough work for me.
Just commenting on the phenomenon of that no matter what you post, someone will be along in minutes to tell you you are doing it wrong. Don't take anything too seriously

Hey BF brothers, quit giving the OP a hard time, just read, learn and take notes, there may be a quiz later and if you don't pass you may have to ride a huffy the rest of your life...lol

**The rider of that bike is not as experienced as i am, so asking them would not be useful.

I tried lifting from the seat tube earlier. It works OK, but all that weight plus weight of stuff in one pannier (only needed one today) makes it a chore after about 2 minutes. All my muscles are in my legs, so lifting dis bike = not ideal. As for shoulder, the welded on brake cable mount points make that not an option. It really was not meant to be carried like that, plus the weight on shoulder. I mean, its a heavy bike, its not meant for speed or racing, its meant to carry stuff & get me to places. Its actually a really, really great design & geometry, just a PITA to negotiate staircases. I think what i'm going to do is put the next dead tube i come across& wrap it around then put the athletic tape as someone suggested, then try to find some way to attach a handle to the seat tube. That way i have two options.

I just grab the seat tube, and hold the bars with the other hand, to lift the front wheel up, so I can go up stairs. For down stairs, one hand only, holding the seat tube.

If that's a problem, get yourself a nice cup of HTFU from the 41 section! O

Lol, that may be too easy, I really need to over think this whole navigation of a bicycle up and down the stairs thingy. (after all the freedom of the free world may be at stake as this is a matter of life or death).

Just having fun Andy, no malice intended, here at BF you kind of have to have a thick skin.
Try posting a question on the 41 and see how they tar and feather you...
As long as you don't take it too seriously or personally you will eventually find yourself just laughing and having a good time.

N+1 time. Carrying a tank up a couple flights of stairs will never be fun, and if you're bike commuting only you ought to own a back-up anyway.

Carrying a 30 pound bike up 2-3 flights of stairs should be nothing for a big strong guy like Andy ... I could do chin ups with a 30 pound bike attached to my body

I have no upper body strength really. I'm not into fitness & "working out" or gyms or fitness clubs etc. Only reason i can ride as far & long as i do is years of doing that exact thing. A hill that was daunting 6 years ago is just another hill today.

This is the only spot where i have to lift my bike & my old bike was a lot lighter.

I don't know about "most hideous", but it is pretty ugly. Here's a less hideous version of the same concept, albeit more expensive.

I used to have a +35 pound bike that I carried up to my second floor apartment by shouldering the top tube, and I had wrapped the top tube with handlebar tape, which softened the pressure on my shoulder. This was just a happy happenstance, as I had wrapped the tube because the paint chipped crazily easy, and after one month of regular bike rack lockups, the bike was starting to look like it'd come out of a war zone.

My bike frame is a deep metallic green that color shifts to maroon when viewed from certain angles. It would fit in great with that.

Yea, i'm contemplating getting some heavy duty transparent packing tape & putting itover the paint on the top tube & bottom tube.

Thanks also for link, between the two i may get both, since they both look good to me.
