Cyclocross and Gravelbiking (Recreational) This has to be the most physically intense sport ever invented. It's high speed bicycle racing on a short off road course or riding the off pavement rides on gravel like : "Unbound Gravel". We also have a dedicated Racing forum for the Cyclocross Hard Core Racers.

rolled up my hose for the winter

just occurred to me, that after rolling up my hose for the winter, any nasty bike cleaning will be more challenging

Yup. Been thinking about the same thing. We haven't had a frost yet in the Twin Cities (what an extraordinary year!), and there isn't one on the horizon for at least another week, so next weekend is OK, but after that, it's either that the bike stays dirty or I'm hauling buckets of water from my basement to the driveway (driveway is on basement level) to clean off all the gravel dust....

Has anybody in colder climates got a different strategy?

I've seen people use weed sprayers you can buy from Home Depot.

I have a short 25 foot hose I keep in the garage. That way I can haul it out to the deck and wash a bike... and then haul the bike, hose, and repair stand back in the garage. I like to use a repair stand when I wash a bike.

The 25 foot hose will drain itself as you roll it up. So it's pretty much like warm weather washing... except I hurry more.

I use one of those to cover my bike in Simple Green after CX races. Neither my hands nor the pump mechanism on most spray bottles like repeated squeezing. I can't imagine that the pressure is sufficient to replace a hose though.

I have a 15" length of old hose I cut and just hook up when needed in winter. I turn off the water from the inside and leave the outside stillcock open so when it goes below freezing it allows for expansion. haven't had a problem in New England with the outside freezing and cracking anything yet. (well now I will since I said that). I ride all winter.

I just don't clean my bike.

Or wait until my wife is out of the house and use the shower.

+1 These work well for cleaning bikes when hose is done for the season.
