Your 2012/13 Quiver... Bikes and Wheels
So, it's nearly summer, which means, it's nearly fall, which means CX season is right around the corner!!!
What additions have you made to your stable or wheel quiver?
This year I will be running:
Redline Conquest Carbon (race bike)
Ridley X-bow (B-bike, last years race bike)
3x32h Major Toms built with BHS hubs (1540g)
Challenge Limus, Grifo, and Grifo XS
Also building a trailer to fit my bikes and my wife's bike, as well as all of our wheels and junk for racing (travel 2.5 hours every other weekend once the season starts in full swing)

I need an upgraded engine and exhaust.
Actually, I did get a cassette (11-25) & tires (michelin jet) for my extra wheel set.

Going for a new bike (probably) this year. It's really down to the Felt or Specialized Aluminum framed disc models. I think I'll probably end up with the Felt, but it's still a little up in the air. I wish they'd just release the damned things already.

New frame/fork after smashing up my old one this spring.
2011 Redline Conquest Pro (alu frame, cf fork)
Transferred most of the components from my old rig, including my beat up wheels which I love.
Cotton candy pink IRO Cold Fusion rims on matching IRO high flange hubs, 32h 3x with Sapim spokes.
I upgraded to a White Industries trials freewheel.
I've still got the same old stable of tires -
Clement PDX Crusade 33mm
IRD CrossFire 32mm
WTB All-Terrain 32mm

I may build up a set of tubular race wheels(probably Major Tom's or similar). Finding the hubs I need (disc compatible) at the spoke counts I want is not the easiest, though.

In two weeks will will have built up...
stevens prestige w/ dura ace shifters, fd, rd, cx70 crank, fsa slk brakes, ritchey/thomson cockpit, with a set of williams 38(vittoria XG) and a set of revolution 25x(tufo cubus)wheels.

I'm excited to try out Specialized Terra tubulars on Major Tom rims. The tires look very nice and the tread pattern seems like a great all-rounder.

Origin 8 CX700 with disc brakes set up in Single Speed as my pit bike and so I can suffer for an additional 30 minutes for only an extra 5 dollars. It's a heavy bike with heavy wheels but it's fun. Not there to win. Just there to get beat up then drink beer.
Considering adding a Focus AX 1 or 2 if funds allow.

Got a set of Forte Titan wheels just before the last race of last season, saved over a pound over my originals.
Will probably try a tubeless setup on those.
Other than that, still using my '09 Fuji 105 mix

Let me just caution you to look before you leap, and choose a well-tested combination of rim/rim-strip/tire. Otherwise you're just making yourself a test subject.

I rode standard (chevron) tread pattern Challange Grifo tubulars most of last season and recently picked up another spare set of similar chevron tread pattern Vittoria Evo XG in 34mm width. I rode a set of older model Vittoria evo XN 32 (semi file tread) on a couple of smoother courses, liked the speed they had but they only actually measured out around 30.5mm wide. Being a 200+ lbd rider, I really felt like I needed a wider tire carcass for floatation on softer surface and ability to run lower pressure for cusioning on rougher surfaces. THis winter I picked up a set of older model 34mm Grifo SX (semi-file tread). UCI 33mm width legality is not an issue for the local series I race and I cant wait to try out SX pattern when courses suite it.
I just visiting the Challange website and it looks like all of the current year 2012 tubulars are now (resized?) and all labeled as 33mm width, before the UCI width rule the offered their tubulars in either 32mm or 34mm width. When the Limus mud tire appeared last year, it was only offered as a 33mm and so looks like all the other tread patterns have done the same, no narrower options.
I have several sets of old box-section tubular wheelsets leftover from road racing 20 yrs ago, they seem to work well enough repurposed as CX wheels now but they all have standard 20mm width rims. I had one tire roll-off incident last year, definitly plan to do a more through job of glueing tires this year but I am debating if it is worthwhile to to replace my perfectly serviceable 20mm rims with wider 23mm major toms?

I considered converting my current setup until I read that article and talked to a couple of my teammates running tubeless and found that it's not a one-size-fits-all solution, and there's a lot of farting around with rim/strip/tire combos if you're not using one of the "known good" setups.
In the end my decision was "I'm just not that concerned with it to spend the time and money when I'm already happy with my current clincher setups." Then I bought a new video camera instead. Race footage this year is gonna be awesome.

Frankly there are a lot of advantages to running clinchers with tubes. I think a lot of people (me?) would be better off focusing on different treads, and riding their bikes, than futzing around with tubeless or tubular.

I'm better off focusing on riding my bike and not eating gelato. I'm pretty sure that will make me faster than any tire tread changes or tubes/tubeless conversions.

I'm upgrading wheels (doing a tubeless setup with Stan's Alpha Disc wheelset, rim strip & Michelin Mud 2's as recommended by CX Mag as well as my current team's mechanic), and going to use a single front chainring (size TBd) with a Paul's chainkeeper, and dropping some raw weight with a Thompson Masterpiece seatpost & FSA OS-99 stem. Most importantly, I'm dropping fat and building muscle to enhance the motor. I haven't lost weight, but am slowly leaning out. I'm trying to drop the bike weight lower by at least a pound, and preferably two.
I'm going to use my current clinchers as pit/general training wheels, but do some training on the new wheels to get used to them and try them out. They're more economical and easier to deal with than tubies. If things go sour and I don't like them, I might bite the bullet and spring for tubies, but I'm wagering on a good workable setup.
