New to the field, greetings.
Afternoon everyone.
I'm new to the idea of converting an old bike to an electric, and I'm looking for guidance on terminology to help with my searches and the like.
I'm not interested in doing a wheel hub motor--mostly for cost reasons, and I like to tinker. Is there a term that address an external motor that is geared with its own sprockets and chain?
also, any good threads here on AC motors and the batteries for them would be great. I'm still searching now.
The fun of it is to use what I have around--a minimalist / resourceful exercise.
any and all help is appreciated. looking forward to it!

I think for starting: em3ev.com/ and https://www.electricbike.com have some good information.
Motors are cheap, and nothing is cheaper than a hub motor. Its the batteries that take the $$$.
If you can't afford a $79 hub motor, I'm wondering what you are budgeting for a $400 battery?

You might get an idea from looking at badzilla's thread. Otherwise, as chas said, the batteries, possibly 2/3 of the cost of a conversion, will swamp you.
