Smart e-bike and Bionx

Hi there

I recently bought a Smart e-bike and I'm trying to figure out a way to bypass the 17mph restriction. I have tried holding the power and mode buttons together but only gives me the option to change the time.

Any ideas?

Thanks

Bikes: GT Transeo & a half dozen ebike conversions.

Probably impossible. Bionx engineering precludes anything non-factory.

What they do is search diligently all over the internet, including foreign language boards, for a Bionx tech or someone who has managed to acquire a technical manual for the particular model that you have, and has posted the details to bypass the limitations imposed on that particular model, by an overly intrusive company policy.

What most people do is avoid such proprietary systems as the royal pita that they truly are, which just a LITTLE BIT of reading and research would have revealed to them before they paid the exorbitantly high prices for such a restricted piece of hardware.

Apparently there are hackers that will unlock it for a price and products are available for DIY. If you're still on warranty that will be voided...

BionX is programmed to be street legal in state of sale. Here in New Hampshire USA that limit is 20mph. California and a few others allow 28mph. If you're in the US a dealer should be able to set it to your legal state limit. I assume you're in Europe/Asia if your limit is 17mph? Keep in mind that increasing speed may decrease range. I'm happy with my 20mph, the longer range and another 2 years of warranty.

edit: If you are only getting 17mph (measured by a separate speed device) in a 20mph state you may have entered your wheel circumference inaccurately (my D-500 actually cuts off at 21 mph). I entered 2155mm for my circumference using a 700x32 tire. If your "Smart Bike" has the newer DS3/RC3 controller you may not have access to those codes. I have the older G2 console which permits more user adjustments.

Heh! I've always wondered if you could just lie about wheel diameter to increase speed. Never tried. Figured if I ever went in for a warranty claim the computer might have recorded the setting change and I'd get nabbed!

I have the G2 console but pressing the power and mode button together only gives me the option to adjust the time.

I live in the UK, where, for some odd reason, the limit is 17mph whereas in the rest of the EU it's 20mph.

Glober- Try again carefully following directions from the owners manual. That said, you won't find any codes for re-setting speed limit. If 17mph is the limit for the UK then that's your max without hacking (or finding a helpful dealer in France!) Not sure if fiddling with wheel size works.

This thread from Electric Bike Review forum has lots of discussion on both speed limits and codes. The thread is several years old so some of the numbers may be outdated...
