Oy. Figures. Some people put products out without any testing at all, it seems. Well, thanks for all the comments. It's far from perfect but sounds totally worth the money.

When Lightning strikes...

Damn! Just had the stupidest thing just happen. I went outside with my bike to take a ride but before leaving I decided to take a quick video of my bike.. I was leaning my bike against the back of my car so I could get the bike to stand up straight. I was standing about 10-15 ft. from my bike with my phone / camera in my hand getting ready to take a video. Suddenly I see my bike falling. Too far away to catch it but no biggie. The thing is when the bike hits the pavement the BT speaker goes rolling off the bike. I thought ( at first glance ) that the speaker just popped off the quick release. Much to my dismay, such was not the case. Turns out a small piece of plastic under the QR bracket on the bars cracked and broke. Very strange because the Speaker and mount never even came close to touching the ground, just the inertia and impact of the bike hitting the pavement was apparently enough to crack the plastic on the mount and send the speaker rolling on the ground. Speaker itself is fine but I'll likely need another mount. . Close inspection of the mount showed that the part that broke is super, super thin ( less than a mm ). I might be able to fix it with some type of epoxy but even if possible you just have to hate the brittleness of cheap Chinese plastic.

If any one has any recommendations for a type of glue or epoxy that sets up and hardens very fast I'm all ears. I need something that starts out jell-like and can fill in the spaces where the plastic broke off and then harden very quickly. It's doable but I need something that will set-up rock hard and adhere to the mount. .If this works I won't need to replace the entire setup. The slide mount itself still works fine

( ** Edit; I might have earned my second MacGyver merit badge. I had a old torch holder designed to hold larger torches laying around and some plastic zip ties. I used the zip ties to hold the BT speaker onto the torch holder. It ain't pretty but at the moment looks likes it's holding. The torch holder isn't real great and I need some longer black zip ties to give it a cleaner look but this should tie me over till I either fix the other mount or find a better solution. You have to hate it when stuff like this happens right at the start of a week of vacation... )

Cheap mounts really bug me. I've had lots of bad experiences with them.

Yep, you have to hate a cheap mount. In this case the mount is designed to pivot. It's the pivot point which is the weak link. If it was just a standard slide mount there likely wouldn't have been a problem. Anyway, seller is sending me a new one which I should have by next week. In the mean time my jury-rigged setup is working fine. I did buy some black zip ties but I think I'll leave it as it is unless it starts to loosen.

When I get the new mount I'm going try to reinforce it with some black duct tape in the area around the pivot. Not sure that will be possible but I'll try. If it's not possible for some reason I'll probably just continue to use the setup I'm currently using because no way is that going to break if for some reason the bike falls to the ground. Of course if I can't get the duct tape in the needed area ( when I get the new mount ) I could just as well reinforce it by putting a zip tie around the whole thing ( like I'm currently doing ). Yep, that should work and really, it's doesn't look all that bad and has no effect on the sound quality. Of course it you use zip ties you can't use the QR but that's a trade off I'm willing to live with.

Continued from my last post above;

Got the new mount just a couple days ago but I decided to keep using the setup I jury-rigged with the zip ties because I'm just figuring it will be stronger and will take more abuse. That said last night I decided to take it off my road bike and put on my MTB just to see how I might like it on a late night MTB ride. Well, as soon as I tried to put it on the handlebars of the MTB the strap came off the mount. At first I thought it broke but thankfully it was just the strap pulling all the way through the mount. I had to remove the speaker off the mount first but once done I was able to reinsert the rubber strap and all was fine. Looks better with the black zip ties but now I have to hope the rubber strap doesn't come loose again. That's the last thing I need while on a ride. At least the original mount doesn't use a rubber strap as it uses a typical screw type mount. Not going to use the new mount though until I get time to buy some black duct tape to help reinforce the pathetically thin plastic.

Other than the mount issues I absolutely love riding with this little speaker. Since I've had a little more time using it I've found that most of the time I really don't need to use it on full volume if I'm riding on quiet roads or MUP. ( Funny but at full volume it can sometimes be annoying, even to me depending on what song is playing ) Of course on an MUP I've already decided it's probably best to not use it if I'm riding in the day when there are other people around. Just wouldn't be right to annoy others with my music.

Since I started using the speaker I had no idea how much I would like riding with music ( or other audible venues ). First thing I discovered is that not all streaming radio websites or apps come across at the same volume. Right now I've been using the "radio.net" streaming radio app and that is working out so good I might purchase the pro version ( so I get less ads ). Yesterday I also added the "Tunein Radio" pay subscription app because I wanted to be able to hear Baseball games and that too is working but sadly comes at a premium price. At least I have the option to listen to my home Baseball broadcasts for now and that is a big plus although I'll likely cancel the subscription by Sept.

Anyway, took the speaker mountain biking last night but was riding in a river valley that has a hard time getting a signal from local cell towers ( depending how close to the river I am ). Thankfully I have some good songs stored from Google play so I have that option too. Sadly last nights ride was no fun fest. Too much mud still despite having waited three days after all the rain. I guess after 3-4 weeks of constant rain it just takes more time for things to dry out. Had to cut the ride short because it was just too tiring trying to fight the soft ground. Hopefully by Sunday things might be a little drier.

I bought the Buckshot when it first came out and last summer I got a new iPhone and then I started having connection difficulties. It used to pair effortlessly, and after I upgraded from the SE iPhone to a 7, ( my first new iPhone was the SE, but upgraded within a week cause it was too small, though it connected just fine and I loved the small size for biking) the 7 took forever to pair and would lose the connection if I paused, so I’d have to start all over again. I emailed Outdoor Technologies and I think we went back and forth with some suggestions, but nothing worked, so they offered me a very nice discount on the 2.0, but couldn’t guarantee that it would be any better.

The 2.0 worked perfectly right from the get go. I just push the power button and the voice tells me it’s powering on, pairing, paired. I don’t have to hold down those buttons anymore and listen for the tiny beeps. My husband still has the 1 and has to fuss with pairing on his android.

The only thing I don’t like about the 2.0 is the clip, I think it gets in the way of strapping to the handlebars. I was looking to get a integrated Garmin/GoPro mount and had a lightbulb moment of attaching the buckshot to a camera mount. So I’m in the process of trying to find a small camera mount

It seems there are lots of good bluetooth speakers directed at cyclists. I see people wearing them on their backpack straps. They sound great. I know these disturb some people, but the period in which I hear it is very short, and they don't bother me. I wear earbuds nowadays, and I'm tempted by these speakers.

About the pairing issues: I use an Android phone and yes sometimes mine too has pairing issues. Sometimes I just have to go into my phone's BT menu and make the connection manually. Most times it will pair instantly but sometimes it won't because it is trying to pair with the wrong thing. Not a big issue as long as I get it to work. Once paired my cheap Chinese speaker seems to hold the connection fine. Anyway my phone has the same issues with pairing with my Desk top computer's Wi-fi hot spot. Most time it connects instantly but sometimes it just tries to connect to something else and I have to go into the menu and do the setup manually. PITA sometimes but I can live with life's minor inconveniences.

Tom, I saw these on Amazon and thought these might interest you. If they didn't cost so much I'd probably buy a set myself. Reviews are stellar. I have to admit I like the idea of freeing up space on the bars. The added plus is you have two speakers so that should be interesting.

That's clever! Thanks.
