JayC replied to you in the other forum by saying that you need to fully discharge the unit initially to get it cycled. I think I also read this in the manual. Mine did not have this issue.

Mapsource and the 705 support the autorouting feature. Look up several posts in this thread for my comments on the difference between a Route and a Course. It has been years since I used Delorme's products so I cannot comment on what it can and cannot do. Mapsource will do everything you listed in your wish-list though and interface seamlessly with the 705.

thanks for the quick help. the unit was discharged. i will try it again. i assume this to be an issue with the the battery indicator and not the battery charge?

thanks,

Well I created another course based on Wenesdays ride right on the 705. It came up with a goal time of 75 minutes. Once again the ride it was based on was much faster, 61 minutes 30 seconds. I think I have figured out the issue though. It is including stopped time also. I am guessing this is it as I watched the virtual partner get to certain points on the ride and stop. Could be stop lights or when I stopped to take screen shots the day before.

Funny thing is that when I create a course in Training Center from my 305 it does not include stopped time.

One more thing that Garmin needs to address.

On a much better note. When I gave up on the course today I told it to navigate me to the address that I started the ride it. Best I can tell ALL the features of the part of the 705 worked perfect! It prompted me for everyturn, updated the route if I deviated from what it suggested, and displayed all times and distance as intented.

Here is some new information on the 705 from Garmin for those of you who are curious (taken from an email I received & cross posted in the anticipation thread). Confirmation that yes, you can purchase City Navigator North America NT 2008 and put it on your own microSD card. Email:

Thank you for contacting Garmin International.

I'm happy to help you with this. Yes, you can purchase the CNNANT2008 DVD and load it to your own microSD card. I hope this helps.

Can you also use the Topo 2008 dvd with the new garmin 605 or 705? I find the City Nav has too much info and the topo 2008 has all the city streets for usa and that is enough detail for me..

You sure can! I am actually loading up a 2gb SD card with most of the US topo maps. It is taking up about 1.8 gb of the card. ETA is about 10 hours to load, OUCH!!!!

Before I started the 10 hour load I loaded just a few sections and tested it. They displayed just fine on my 705 and I did not get any read errors. I did not test routing on them but I have routed on topo maps on my Garmin 60CSx before so I dont anticipate any issues.

Tip:

If you're trying to get Mac GTC to play nicely with the 705 and are having problems- Delete profiles off of the garmin. (find the profile file on the unit in mass storage and trash it) Click file and Send to Device. It will say that there is a profile mismatch. Choose the one on GTC. You should then be able to import data from the 705 into Mac GTC.

Not that I know of. It charges just fine and as far as I know only 2.0 will charge the unit. I am wondering if it was taking so long because the maps were on CD and not the hard drive.

It never did finish. I killed it after about 15 hours and it was only showing 60% complete.

Instead of putting every topo I own I am going to put on what I know I will use.

There is already a update for the 605/705. Thanks to kring for posting it in the "anticipation" thread.

FYI - there is a software update for the 605/705 already... use webupdater to get it. here's the info below

Changes made from version 2.00 to 2.10:

* Updated some language translations.
* Fixed problem updating GPS with WebUpdater.
* Corrected some problems with UserProfile file. Wheel size is no longer set to 0 by default. This was causing problems with Training Center.
* Fixed problem handling courses with no distance information.
* Changed battery display on menu bar and GPS page to be red when below %15 full.
* Fixed some problems with power and cadence averaging.
* Added GPS copyright information to poweron screen.

That is way too long.. I loaded the west coast states on my etrek vista hcx and it took about 5 minutes.. I was thinking usb 1.0, but 10 hours is way too long for that, maybe he is using sneakernet..

You might want to try creating a course from BikeRouteToaster or some of the other sites. TC is about as barebones as you can get for working with courses. You can also create one from MapSource if you want but it requires jumping through some hoops. MapSource is probably the best way to go since it has the same map data and everything will always match up.

OK, so I finally got the unit out of the box, registered, and put in some data. I can see the maps on the tiny card inserted on the back. This has so far fulfilled one of the 3 functions I needed it for. Another function I needed was to log miles and such, but since I plan to leave my other CatEye computer on, that is a mute point with this one. I want to use this one mostly to navigate new courses, different areas I am not familiar with, etc. That brings me to use #3.

In the simplest form possible as I am not very computer literate, how do I create a course and load it into the unit so I can follow it while on the road? I normally do this with online places like bikeroutetoaster.com I just tried plotting a route/course there and saving it to the desktop, but when I tried to "import" it to training center, it does not allow me to choose it as if it is in a format it can't understand. I use a Mac by the way.

I need help!!!

Anybody that is willing to take a few minutes to talk me through it? Please email me or PM me your number at dgasmd at netscape dot net and I'll call you so it doesn't cost you anything. Or, you could PM me or email me and I'll send you my number instead if you feel more comfortable with it.

Thanks in advance.

Got some info from Garmin that may be of use to those of you having transfer speed problems:

From an email response from a Garmin tech:

Thank you for contacting Garmin.

You could (note it is a MicroSD card slot, though—sometimes called TransFlash). You’d buy a new City Nav North America NT 2008 DVD-ROM and from it you could save maps to a compatible blank MicroSD data card.

Avoid SanDisk ULTRA II MicroSD cards. SanDisk is actually wonderful…just avoid that specific family.

Thank you again for your interest in Garmin GPS. Have you seen our online Map Viewer? Preview the basic data in many of the MapSource products firsthand.

Anyone using a Sandisk card?

Anyone using a Sandisk card?

I just checked the card I was adding topos to and it is NOT an Ultra II. It was a San Disk Micro SD card.

Over the weekend I successfully added 1.9 gb of maps to the card. The maps came from Topo 2008, National Park Topo's, and Lake and Water Ways (or something like that). It took Mapsource about 16 hours to compile the maps. They were all on the hard drive. It then took about 80 minutes to move them to the SD card. The only reason I can think it took it so long is cause I was combining maps from multiple sources. Oh well, at least it worked.

JayC suggested BikeRouteToaster in a reply above, have you checked that site out? Hopefully some of the other folks will post the sites they use also.

I am using a standard sandisk micro sd card, been working just fine for a few months.. I think the Ultra II line is a higher speed card. I have the Ultra II cards in my sony digital camera and bought them because of the higher speed refresh rate..

How do you do it from training center. I have that downloaded. By the way, does mapsource have maps for europe as well in the single version or do you have to buy a separate version for european maps? Do you have a link for them?

I went to bikeroutetoaster.com as JayC suggested and created a course. I then saved it to my desktop as a GPX file, but when I went to look it up in training center under "Import" the file's extension was pgx.xml, so it would not recognize it and allow me to "pick it". Also, how do you separate where you download stuff to, the card vs the hard drive?

OK, so I made small progress today. I called Garmin, and after 12 min. on hold, I spoke with someone very much willing to help me out. He was clueless, but willing to help out though. I told him that all I wanted to know was how to make routes on the computer, saves them as files, and then upload them to the unit for me to follow. Between what I had read here and what little he could offer, we got it going. I was doing the routes via bikeroutetoaster.com and saving them as a GPX file, but when I saved them, they would show up in my desktop with a .xml extension at the end. I just went and erased that part of it and it still would not work. He told me to save them as a tcx file, but the same thing happened. However, as soon as I erased the .xml from those, training center would recognize them. So, I was able to import them. Once there, I plugged the 705 to my USB port, hit send to device, and after a few seconds it would upload it. The customer service guy told me to make sure I would remove the maps card from the device when uploading routes to make sure it wouldn't go into the card and erase map data though. He said it should not do it though, but to remove it anyway and just replace it after I was done. So far it is working.

I have not been able to mount it on the bike yet, and take it for a spin. However, for what I am going to be using it anyway I am not in a hurry. I won't be analyzing data from it nor will I be using training center as a training tool anyway. I am keeping my other simple bike computer on for now. I am also curious if the DiNotte lights (600L x 2) I use will have some interference with the unit. It did with my previous computer's (Delphi 6.0) HRM feature, but it has been fine with my CatEye current unit. I will report on this when I get it set up and use it with the lights.

If anyone using a Mac has any questions as to how to do this, just PM me and I'll be willing to help with as little as I know.
