Has anyone installed the speedtrap sensor with the digital wireless computer? The computer came wit ha speed sensor and magnet and a cadence sensor with magnet. Do I need to install them if I'm using thei ntegrated speedtrap in the fork?

I wondered the same thing myself.

I tried the install without the included SPEED sensor (the one that came with the computer) and the computer would not pair with the Speedtrap sensor in the fork. I got an ERROR message.

When I tried it with the included SPEED sensor, the unit paired no problem.

I don't think it is supposed to work like that though. The whole purpose of the Speedtrap integration is to not have the SPEED sensor mounted to the bike, right?

So I would conclude that:

Looks like you have to install the sensor into the fork for it to work. The sensor is not there when you buy the bike, just the ablity to integrate it is.

I bought and installed the sensor for the fork.

I'll run it back and have the LBS take a look.

Probably just a bad sensor in this case.

It was the stupid magnet! Of all things. The LBS switched it for an old Cateye magnet (after trying new sensors, batteries...) and it works perfectly. The TREK magnet was not strong enough to register in the sensor when it passed on it's rotation.

Thanks Mike R - just switched the new Trek magnet for a really old Cateye off my mountain bike and it works! Also I found the computer has to be mounted on the handlebars to pair with the Speedtrap - no use holding it like I did!

Any help would be appreciated before I sack my new Speedtrap/ Incite 8i and start all over again ...

I've read this thread with interest as I've just bought a speedtrap to go with the Bontrager forks (on Trek 7.5FX WSD) which I'm trying to pair with my new Incite 8i computer.

I've since also bought the spacer to get the speedtrap nearer to the spokes and then tried a cateye magnet as suggested.

Its still no good - does anyone have instructions for the speedtrap ? e.g. which way round the batteries go, where abouts the magnet is suposed to pass the speedtrap sensor, max distance from speedtrap to magnet etc ? I'm missing something obvious or have bought a dud.

On my Trek 7.6 I had the lbs install two different trek computers including the new one they put out - they always fight to get it paired - the problem is the magnet is not strong enough because where the magnet is on the spoke is too far from the speed trap - solution was a stronger magnet -

Only road bike it paired with a standard magnet - the spokes are closer to the speed trap.

The new trek/bontreger computers are WAY more stable and better designed than last years series -

Still slightly confused but now how a working computer.

My local store saved the day - after their mechanic gave up an afternoon to sort this. The Incite 8i that I was trying to pair with a speedtrap turns out to be 'analogue' and not digital as it needs to be.

He upgraded my computer to the digital Trek Incite ACH Digital to solve the problem. This was really kind as the ACH is way more expensive than the 8i that I originally bought.

My observations ...
1) Trek really need to sort out a clear message for the Speedtrap as to what works and what doesn't to avoid any one else this frustration.
2) The 'Bike Factory' in Chester (north west United Kingdom) gives fantastic customer service and I'll never spend money in any other bike store.

Wish I would have seen this thread earlier! I spent about 2 hours trying to get the sensor and computer to pair, moving the magnet in various positions, etc...it was definitely the magnet that was the problem. I didn't have any older (and/or stronger) magnets lying around, but I did have another "newer" Trek magnet from an 8i I returned a couple days ago in favor of the Link/Speedtrap combo (forgot to put it back in the box - woops).

I just stuck both magnets on the spoke side by side near the bottom of the sensor. Low and behold, it worked! So, if you have 2 crappy Trek magnets you can use both of those together and the Speedtrap should pick them up...did for me anyway. I will probably just get a better magnet and replace both of those next time I swing by my LBS, but for now my computer is working.

Technical note: The batteries mount positive side up.

I bought it 2 months ago..everything went perfect till yesterday... low battery signal on Node1... when getting and putting it back, the battery showed full charged again ... But no way to pair my speedtrap sensor back ...

So I bought the Speed Trap sensor from the local Trek shop as well as a Bontrager 4w and noticed what people said here initially, analog vs digital, so I hoped on bontragers online store and picked up the Node2 as the Node1 was unavailable. Take everything to the shop after I fiddled with the thing trying to pair it all up and to work with no success, as well as a couple of other things that needed to get done to the bike. Go to pick it up the next day and they had gotten it to pair and work with the Node2. I go out that night, doesn't work. Brought it back in, thought it was the batteries. Replaced, still can't find it. Today I am taking it back to the dealer and see if they can get it to magically work.

I'll see if they have anything on the Speed Trap sensor. Hopefully I can have a functional computer.

Well, after a replacement of the batteries and fiddling they couldn't get it to work either. They ordered the Bontrager SpeedTrap sensor and it picked up almost instantaneous. We ran into other problems which were resolved once we replaced the magnet with one that passes the sensor more closely than the one included. All is working well on it now.

Using the Bontrager Speedtrap sensor on a Trek 7.5 FX requires an additional spacer in the fork this bike uses the Bontrager SSR wheels which leave extra space between the spokes and the sensor. I recently purchased the 7.5 FX, Node 1, and fork mounted Speedtrap. Could not get it to pair and operate. Only one of the guys at the local Trek shop knew about the spacer. From the Bontrager site: "Some wheels may require the use of a SpeedTrap spacer: Part #414162". It should be included with the sensor but is actually about a $3 accessory.
