I only write that in envy because I weigh in somewhere around 1000 lumens.

If Rudolph ever retires from pulling Santa's sleigh cyccommute could definitely light the way. I think it's pretty cool how he is riding with that much halogen light.

Even yours is a little weak
4500 lumens
I don't have the same distance checks but I can see reflective signs from up to 7 blocks (640 m) away. I can also see pebbles, glass, potholes, rocks, etc. under street lights with traffic next to me at a nice comfortable 40 or 50 feet. No washout from other sources.
And 40 to 45 mph is no problem

Thank you for your help. I had a friend give me this 17 Lux version of the same light.
I use it in the day time. Has a 6 hr bright run time, 8 hr low run time.
Is easy to recharge and people tell me That Light is Bright.
Here is the 17 Lux at Night. The car just happened to come down the street when I was taking the pic.

At the risk of further injuring this dead horse...
the two things I find very nice about the led flashlight setups, and have convinced me to keep on this route, are:
-simplicty
-reliability
A solid case could be made that the two are related, of course.
my personal experience is that the all-in-one, flashlight-based systems are unbeatable for simplity and reliability. Of course, other people will have different experiences, but I personally have had several (low and high-end) bike-specific lights, and DIY lights, and always eventually had issues with switches, connectors, etc.
Plus those overvolted halogen bulbs look good but burn out pretty quick.... Or such was my experience.
for friends 'n relations asking for a bike light, I send them straigh to the Fenix website for a 2xaa light and Wallyworld for batts and charger. cheap, "bright 'nuff", simple enough my grandma can use it no problem.

Take the charger back to wallyworld, I made that mistake. I kept wondering why my batteries weren't lasting and finally it turned out to be the charger. Go look at a charger by lacross or maha and get one of those, trust me it will save you $ in the long run as the $ you saved with a walmart quality charger will easily be made up replacing batteries sooner than necessary, I had some that didn't even last a year, then I bought a real charger and have been fine since. I quit using rechargeables for a couple years it was so bad.
