Anyone have any experience with Monkey Lights?

Somehow I ended up on this website and I instantly became a fan of these things. Anyone have them? I think they'd be a blast for night rides and such - if they're as durable and bright as they seem to be, I've got to have a set.

Let me know!

Hmmm...I'd be worried drivers would start paying me too much attention (i.e., not focusing on where they're supposed to be driving). And this certainly isn't for the weight weenies (i.e., board, three AA batteries & zip ties per wheel, perhaps double). But it does look cool.

Search on MonkeyElectric and Hokey Spokes limited to this sub-forum will yield many discussions on these products. I have researched them thoroughly this way.

At $65 per and pairs recommended so it is $130 per wheel x 2 = $260. I think I will pass. My friends purchased me flashing wheel pattern lights that attach to the stems. Since they attach to the stem obviously only one per wheel is recommended. Since it is a gift I don't know the cost. The packaging is wierd. There is a model number but I cannot track it down on the internet. I used them the other night and one of the riders that got them for me said they looked cool. They seem sturdy enough and are advertised to fit motorcycle and car wheels. I had to get Schrader to Presta converters to attach them.

If you are just worried about visibility you can use inexpensive Nite Ize.

Look under Illuminating Gear and Cycling.

Nite Ize but you probably need traditional 28+spoke 3-cross wheels or I cannot vouch that they will stay in place. They work great if have the right spoke configuration.

I have the Monkey Electrics and I have only one per wheel and it works great. However, if you stop near people you will have to talk to them. On Halloween, people actually screamed as I went by (I also had on Down Low Glow). I only put one on my xtracycle bike because the bag covers most of the wheel anyway. Cars aren't distracted but they sure notice from the side. No more worries about being hit from the side, I am safer riding at night than during the day now. I used to have the valve lights but these are a huge step up in fun and safety.

Thanks for the info! I really was just looking at the Monkey Lights for casual night riding and things like the local moonlight ride on my cruiser, so I'm not too concerned about weight or much else. The Down Low Glow stuff looks really neat, but equally as expensive...

Thanks again,

I purchased a pair in early December and put them both on the front wheel of my ss and rode around town and by our christmas tree lane where all the lights have decorations...and it was kinda cool and fun to hear all the people go OOOH! and point at my bike. I even had one of the teenagers screaming at me to stop so he could find out what they were.

So could be distracting, but at least they are looking at ya. They are fun, and you will definitely get comments...all positive so far.

It's a really cool and functional light. Only weighs 155 grams with batteries. Put it near your hub and you won't know it's there. You can do single color mellow patterns if you're concerned about being too distracting. I've been using it everyday for about 4 months rain or shine and love it. No problems yet.

Use "BIKECULT" coupon for 10% off.

Awesome! Thanks for the discount info, ellerbro! At their prices, every little bit helps, even though it's totally worth it!

I really want a pair of these, but I would be afraid that they would be stolen.

Bang for the Buck

Which would be the most versatile light, seen from many angles.

1) The Monkey Lights?
2) The down low glow?
3) Of course, both.

This is difficult to answer. IMHO the The Down Low Glow theoretically should be visible from more angles. In practice I think that DLG could be washed out easily by other lights in urban areas. The Monkey Lights on the other hand might not be as visible from as many angles but may be visible more often fromt the angles that both the DLG and ML are visible. I think the movement of the ML would be more eye catching.

That is just my impression bit I have seen neither in person. I am just going from the videos that I have viewed and trying to judge by the nature of the lights. So I would choose the Monkey Light if I could only have one.

My riding buddies call me Dwight the Light so my opinion is highly valued when it comes to lights because I research them so much. You might be able to do a search and find a thread where someone has seen both in person.

I have both but am disappointed with the crappy way Down Low Glow does their battery. For now, I am riding with only the Monkey lights and I get more comments now than I did when I only rode with the Down Lows. The Down Lows were better for cars passing me but a car swinging towards me from the side, see the Monkeys and stop in their tracks faster than with Down Low. Once I get a new battery rigged up, I will be riding with both if I plan on being in traffic a lot. I have a Dinotte in the rear and two 200 lumens in front so I would get the monkeys before the Down Low.

Unterhausen--I have just one MonkeyLite attached to my bike. It is held on by zip ties so it would be fairly hard for someone just walking by to steal. To remove them quickly the thief would need to be carrying some side cutters.

Things I like about them:
--Bright, cool looking patterns
--Batteries last a lot longer than I expected (when run on low-which is still very bright)
--Easy to turn on and off.
--You can customize pattern if you want to (I never messed with it though)

Things I don't like:
--Expensive
--Heavy--I just had one on my rear wheel and at higher speeds, I could feel my bike surging because of the extra weight on one side of the wheel. If I had one on each wheel, I think I could make the surging disappear by placing the MonkeyLite in opposite positions on the front and rr wheel.
--Needs side cutters to remove quickly (for daytime rides). This also means some dirtball walking by can't steal them.

Hey love2pedal.com (Dan),

Do you also run the eBay store called love2 pedal? If so - GREAT store!! Any discounts for BF'ers? I've got my eye on the Starbucks jersey....

Thanks for the ML info too - I'm saving for a set of two for each wheel on my Electra Boney Finger...

roadnoob,

Yes, that is my store.

If you (or any other BF readers) want a discount code, contact me (through the link at the bottom) and I will email you a discount code.

I can't post it directly here because it would violate the forums solicitation rules.
