I'm finally getting around to installing my Cateye Vel05 Cyclocomputer. I've read thru all the directions and they don't make it really clear. Where exactly should i place the magnet, meaning how high/low should it be on the rim? I would think that's if it's too high or too low it could throw off the speed and distance.

Location won't make a difference.

It just has to be close enough for the pick up unit to work.

Think about it: no matter how close to or far from the rim the magnet is, it goes around the same number of times at a given wheel speed. Therefore, it makes no difference to the accuracy of the computer.

What makes a difference is the closer to the rim, the greater the distance from the fork blade (in general)--which may affect whether you can get the magnet and its pickup in reasonable proximity. There's also a small increase in rotational inertia towards the rim, but at practical bike speeds, it should be negligible. If you're OCD about wheel-balance, you might choose a spoke "most opposite" the valve stem, but again, in practice the difference is likely to be marginal.

Thanks a lot for the help guys. I just got back from doing some errands and i checked the cyclocomputer distance vs. google maps and it was the exact same. It was definitely awesome to how fast i was going.

How fast do you get?

The max was 29.4mph on the steep hill before the end of my road and the average was about 15mph.
