New Phone (G1-Google)
Hey everyone,
Sometime early in the morning yesterday, my old phone just stopped accepting batteries. Although I am a computer guy, I am not a phone guy. That being said, I was not looking for anything too fancy with touch screen or anything, but I happened to come by a trade in G1-Google phone for 175.00. That is pretty much the going rate for a good used one on the internet, and it just happened to come in about 3 hours earlier. I did what every good BFer does and snatched it up.
As I have my own business, I love the e-mail capabilities on this thing along with all of the common web browsing and phone usage. Less sensitive and quirky than my friends I-Phone. I did just discover a couple of good apps for me to try out like the GPS so I can finally track my rides; compass, and picture google search are all going to be new favorites of mine. So far, outside of size, slightly larger than my old dumb phone, I have nothing bad to say about this thing. Anyone else have one, know any handy apps worth looking at as a rider, or anything tips would be greatly appreciated?

I would either use the Google app Mytracks or Cardiotrainer, both give you option to upload your ride data via gpx file so you can use other websites to analyze your ride.. I personally like the Cardiotrainer app for riding and running.. It has audible cues and pace info which is great if you have to carry your phone in your pocket like I do.

Both are free downloads from the android marketplace.. Just be aware that using the gps with these apps will drain your battery pretty fast, so a full charge before riding is best..

The thing to keep in mind with the G1 in particular is that it is a 1st generation android phone, and it runs a fairly old version of Android (v1.6), and AFAIK there are no plans to issue official updates to bring it to something newer. If you go into the market, it simply doesn't show you apps that require a newer version of Android (2.1 or 2.2, for example).
My current phone also runs 1.6, but in theory Moto is working on an update to version 2.1, and will hopefully be released in a few weeks.
It is possible to hack the phone (i.e. root it) and force an update using ROMS you find on the internet, but there is always the danger that if you screw something up you can brick the phone.
