Bike lock!!!!!!!!!!!********************??
Hello People,
I think this post falls under the right topic...
What kind of bike lock do you use? I thought about buying a Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboutit 1410. It is rated 12 on their security rating.

If you want maximum security get a lock that has been independently rated, and gets top marks. The two big rating agencies are Sold Secure and ART. Sold Secure's highest rating is 'Gold', and ART's highest rating is '5 Star', but this is a new rating for ultra-heavy chains, so in reality '4 Star' is excellent security for bicycles.

I live and tour in areas where bike theft is very, very rare. I normally don't carry any lock at all. When I go into a store, I just leave the bike leaning against a wall in a public place. I'm not particularly attached to either of my bikes, so if they did by some miracle get stolen, it would be annoying at most.

Like the above poster said...it depends on where you ride and park the bike. I have to agree with Sheldon Brown, locking is a strategy. You should check out his article on Locking a bike.

To answer the original question...I use a cable lock. The masterlock Python is my favorite. But I don't leave my bike un attended for too long and the areas I'm in are not high theft areas. Usually I am almost always in sight of my bike. I find U-locks too heavy to carry and overkill for my needs.

I have the Kryptonite New York standard lock. I put it through the seat stay and rear wheel -- pretty much where the rim brakes would go if I had them.
don't worry too much about their insurance. It's so hard to claim, that it may as well be worthless. That plus if you read the fine print, it says it will cover the deductible on whatever other insurance you have such as renters or homeowners, not necessarily the cost of teh bike itself.
