Mapmyride, no gps accuracy...

Hi all, i've been recording some rides with mapmyride android application. The device is a Samsung mobile phone namely Galaxy Lite Spica. After i save the ride and check it out on my pc i see my routes are not straight but is a mess. Please see below route i did today. Do you have any experience with this? Any suggestions?

Some people suggest it's due to high solar flames but i don't think so because i have seen so accurate results in other posts. Maybe it's all my crappy mobile phone can do?

Bikes: Look 585

I exported the ride and viewed it in Google Earth -- it looks pretty much the same. It could be due to solar activity:

However, I ride almost everyday with a Garmin Edge 500, and have noticed no problems. It's could be the MapMyRide application, but there's no way to know for sure.

I've experienced inconsistencies with the MapMyRide app on my iPhone.

It is not just MapMyRide. I have had the same thing happen with MyTracks on my Android. Apparently the GPS is hunting between satellites which do not agree precisely on my location and the error factor has me zig-zagging or even going in spirals. When the ride is over it can read as much as 50% longer than and faster than is correct. It happens one day and then might not happen again for several weeks.

Where is your phone during your bike ride? GPS satellites are very far away so their signal is weak and the accuracy depends on the receiver getting a direct line-of-sight signal. Your body (or anything else that contains water or conducts) will block much of the signal so reception won't be nearly as good if you keep the phone in a pocket vs. on a handlebar mount. Accuracy will also be less in areas with tall buildings, lots of tree cover, or in canyons.

Bikes: giant

i use the mapmyride app on my samsung galaxy s2.i keep the phone in a handle bar bag.when i get home i can watch my ride on the pc and it looks pretty accurate to me. my only complaint is the miles it racks up and the miles my bike comp rack up are never the same.i think that prob is because when i go under cement structures it blocks the gps

I was carrying the device on my pocket. I'll look up to a solution for handlebar mount.

This is only a general statement, but one key to making sure that you get accurate GPS-based information is to allow your phone, Garmin or other device time to adequately "link" to the satellites because your accuracy greatly improves once you tune to more than one satellite. I was having the same issue with my Garmin when I first got it years ago, not realizing that would make a difference. Now, I turn it on immediately upon going outside and allow it to synch to satellites while I'm getting my bike ready and I no longer have issues.
