AFAIK, Polar HR straps have a proprietary signal and won't work with anything else unless it's specifically designed to work with them, like some gym equipment. The Edge 500 and other Garmin devices use ANT+ which is an open protocol. You'll need to get an ANT+ HR strap to work with the 500.
