Garmin 500 question

I just got the 500 and would like to know if I can download the data into an excel file so I can have the data more handing that on the Garmin website.

You can save it as gpx and import it into excel as xml. Either get it directly off the 500 usb mount, or use the garmin training center to get it off the device then export it as a gpx file.

The native activity data file format for the 500 called .fit. (not GPX) There is documentation on the web on how the data is structured and various tools to manipulate the data. Alternatively, look at third party websites that can accept the data and provide more analysis such as RideWithGPS, Strava, Golden Cheetah, etc..
