Going to be 60 or over here this weekend and I am finally over bronchitis after 3 weeks, I can actually exert a little without coughing up a lung ... and I am really swampped with other commitments because it's 2 weeks before Christmas.
I can't win. Maybe if I get up at 3 am and go out early before I have to get other things done.
Or maybe the family will just have to live without something this year .... Can I just stand a broom up in a wastebasket next to the fireplace and tell them it's a Festivus tree?

I hope to get some miles in Sunday. Gotta get out there- it's dark after work these days.

I got a kind of a re-start yesterday!
I got out for the first time in about three months, choosing the Trek 610 with fenders and decently low gearing. 52/42 and 13/32 7-speed. After being sedentary most of that time and starting statins (not sure these have much effect), I had trouble spinning above 75 rpm at 14 mph. We kept riding for 1 hour and 35 minutes, and my average HR was 128. On the big nasty hill I saw 146, which was a struggle and I'm glad I had the 32 tooth rear end. I'm thinking about if I can put an Alpine double crank on, a compact Alpine (44 tooth big ring), or a HS+G triple. Gotta get out the slide rule ...
I actually pushed up the hill with not terrible leg discomfort, so apparently I have decent leg strength at this point. This is probably due to keeping up with Iyengar yoga. But my aerobic capability is not too great right now. On this ride when I'm in better shape I climb at up to 7 mph with HR up to 165 as a peak, even on this heavier Trek.
This ride was preceded by 90 minutes of Iyengar. Except for limb and core muscles, I usually don't need a lot of recovery after yoga.
This Trek has a custom fork with 65 mm offset, so the bike has about 35 mm trail. I had a light rear load, but the low trail really helps when climbing slowly (3.5 mph!), compared to my other bikes with more normal 60 mm trail. Cadence while climbing was Bikes with higher trail, including this Trek before it got the low-trail fork, darted impulsively from side to side in slow climbing even up to 6 mph. For me that's a tangible benefit of low trail!
Weather was grey but dry, about 55 degrees
Today everything hurts, but of course in that good way. It's raining now and will probably continue all day. Time for an indoor spin!

Welcome to the 50+ forum, Whitey. We have had an extended riding season up here, too. I'm not doing many miles but have been able to catch a ride when the temps are near 50. Yesterday was a 5 mile zip around the south end of town with decent hills. Of course, when riding this old Colnago no hill is easy. Gearing on that thing is not hill friendly but will pack a decent workout on in short amounts of time.

I'm jealous of everyone's warm temps. I put in 61 miles yesterday with temps just above freezing. Getting ready to head out now for another 20 or so with temps around 20. Gotta make sure I get some miles in before the Steeler's game.
