Healthy Living
Only 2.7 percent of U.S. adults live healthy lifestyle, Oregon State researchers find | OregonLive.com According to this article, there are four markers of healthy living. I'm several pounds heavier than I was 60 years ago in high school. So three out of four is good, right.

Many of us in this forum are 2.7 percenters, in healthful lifestyle, even if not financially.

Bikes: Catrike 559 I own some others but they don't get ridden very much.
So if I do all four does that mean that I won't die?

My exercise is beyond moderate, my diet has been excellent for decades, I have NEVER touched a cigarette, my fat % is so low that in fresh water I will only float vertically with the water lever above my nose unless I inhale deeply before the water reaches that level. My weight has been less than HS weight for years and became even 10 pounds less
after my bilateral orchiectomy to abate the growth of my prostate cancer due to the production of testosterone. I was even in the prediabetic range only a few months ago.
4 out of 4 WITH PLENTY OF HEALTH ISSUES. GO FIGURE.

4 out of 4. Of course I do spend quite a bit of time on a bike on country roads. I suppose my chances of getting hit by a truck are higher than average.

I know we sort of talk in jest about doing all these healthy habits and "we're gonna die anyway", however there is a lot that can be done to improve quality of life as we age. Of course we die but that doesn't give me any less reason to try to improve in areas of my life. If that were the case then why do anything to improve.
People use all sorts of excuses not to make better choices, then when the consequences catch up to them they wonder why. Our society promotes instantaneous results so often when someone goes to the MD with an issue they get a pill to fix it instead of, perhaps trying lifestyle change.

I think they missed one of the key factors in healthy living: stress management. There is healthy stress, like moderate exercise and intermittent fasting, and unhealthy stress caused by things like lack of sleep, worry, grief and loss, trauma, work stress etc. The problem is that we live in a culture that rewards us for being willing to endure continuous stress over long periods of time.
Then there is the wild card of inherited genetic vulnerabilities. The bottom line is that even if you do everything "right" this does not guarantee of a long and disease-free life. One added complication is that what is considered "healthy" at one point in time is found to be problematic at another - diet is the best example. This confuses people and leads many folks to simply ignore the advice.
