My idea of a vacation day

Some take vacation days and go to places fly on planes and ect. I have done that but today the perfect vacation day. I took off work did a really nice 62 mile ride in 3:17 never even unclipped. Perfect Central Ill fall day although warmer this afternoon. I think I could have done a century today probably in under 5:30 but stopping at 62 I am not wiped out and still plenty of the day left done at 9:30.

So I go home go to the meat store get some seasoned ribeye's to grill. I find Paulaner Oktoberfest and Ayinger Ofest at Binny's. Grill these steaks up and some sweet onions on the side, with the brew. As far as I can tell this is best vacation day and the best way to spend it.........

Metric in 3:17 without stopping! Century in 5:30!!!???

Now we know why you ride alone.

Nice. I like to play hooky from work every once in a while, usually on a nice spring, summer, or fall day, and do the same thing.

Amazing how "sick" you can get, very suddenly, at 7:30 in the morning when you are staring down the hour commute to the office and realize it's a perfect day for a ride. Cough, cough, cough.

It was a very nice day for a much shorter and easier ride in Southern Illinois. If you ever are visiting near St Louis, drop on by.

I'm with you Deacon Mark, that sounds like a perfect day to me. Nice stout pace BTW.

I submit my evidence, my wife's FB post last month: "On vacation. Slept till 8. Breakfast overlooking the golf course. Lounged till noon. Took an hour shower. Meanwhile, Brent was up at 4:30, riding 110 miles, climbing 6K feet of hills. --To each her own."

So today my second day of vacation I got up and ran 5.5 miles then headed out for an easy 20 mile ride to get the breeze blowing it is humid and warm here today. Then a bit of a nap, had group on retreat and did Adoration and Benediction for them, now this evening have a Sierra Nevada Torpedo Ale.................I need to go on vacation more often.

I'm an altar sever at benediction sometimes.

One of my favorite things in the world is to incense at the Eucharistic blessing.

Sounds like a wonderful day. Thanks for serving. Pray for me.

My work keeps me so (satisfactorily) busy that often vacation means just nothing coming in the in-box. Usually for any vacation I still take the first day off just to catch up with some work items. And wonk that I am, I find going to professional conferences a “vacation," though my time schedule is not my own. Since I don’t fly, there go another two days traveling. Going to visit family too is nice but involves working with others to plan our time. So a “staycation" here in beautiful and interesting Boston can be the best.

On prior thread about the “perfect” day, my schedule was:
  • an early morning long bike ride, at least about 40 miles
  • a late morning walk and lunch with my daughter through one of Boston’s tony shopping districts
  • an afternoon watching TV, and a nap
  • then dressing up and an early dinner and going social ballroom dancing with my wife. (Hopefully I have the following day off too.)
  • and maybe some posting to Bikeforums
From this this thread, “Hobbies

My (our) hobby/amateur pursuit during leisure time though is social ballroom dancing. After about eight years of lessons in the 1980’s my wife and I go out dancing once a week. A perfect Saturday is an early morning long bike ride, and dining out and dancing that evening.

Hi
Tim,

Every time I have seen your avatar, I thought it does look like a monstrance. Near our home is the St. Clement Eucharistic Shrine (not my home church). It has a 9:00 PM Sunday Mass I have occasionally attended, and they have a following Eucharistic Adoration, and that is the only place I have seen it in years.

That church does serve a large college population, and that’s probably the reason for such a late Mass. It’s heartening to see such a large attendance by college students. It’s a beautiful Gothic style church, with excellent musicians, and an inspiring homilist whose sermons are transcribed on the website.

We all should take mini vacations like this more often.

My last vacation day I got up and had a kayak outfitter drop me off at a landing on the Brule river where I paddled leisurely down river with a nice long stop for lunch under some cedar trees. Took me five hours. At the end point I dropped the kayak off to the side of the landing, climbed in my truck and drove to a nearby trail and mountain biked. Next up I'm looking at heading to the UP and staying in a yurt or cabin this winter. Either bike, ski or snowshoe in depending on the snow conditions.

Bikes: Too Numerous (not)

Even smaller mini vacations... After bike-commuting home from the train station, I retrieve the mail and sit in the Adirondack chairs in my front yard and read. Frequently neighbors stop by and we have a (craft) beer. My front yard looks over a park where youth soccer, football, and little league is constantly going on (there's something musical about the distant "dink" of an aluminum bat followed by cheering). Then the sun sets over the park.

My wife's idea of a mini vacation involves shopping, however.

I can sell back unused vacation days at the end of the year and get the pay for them. I'm still saving up for a home just about going crazy from my current living situation and have 3.5 weeks of vacation left for the year.

This morning....

Coworker: You taking Friday off to go ride with Al? He took off and said he wants to go on a long ride.

Me: Nah, socking the money away still is more important.

Lunchtime....

Al: How much vacation time you have left? I plan on going on a long road ride but don't like to go at it alone on the roads.

Me: Sounds good, I've got 3.5 weeks left. Looks like I'll have 3.45 weeks left. Where we going Friday?
