Headsets- Hey RG!
Question to the group (especially the Grouch)- Ritchey Logic Comp threadless headset- "brinneled" - can I replace just the bearing set, or is it cheaper to just replace the entire headset?

Brinelling /ˈbrɪnəlɪŋ/ is the permanent indentation of a hard surface.
If that's the case for one or more races, new bearings won't help.

Check cups for heavy markings, also both races. If not trashed, go with new ball bearing sets and button it up. I'd add a new star nut for the 3.00 cost just to insure a good preload.

Thanks guys- I understand what it is. What I'm after, is on this particular headset (semi-cartridge bearings), is it more cost effective/less pain to just have a whole new headset installed (29.95) vs trying to find the bearing/race set and drop it in? I can find no info on exactly WHAT the "semi-cartridge" is, not can I find anyone who has it listed.

"Brinnelling" means that the bearing balls have made little dents in their races. To me that means that you have to replace the races.
Now here's where it gets interesting: In a cartridge bearing the balls and races are packaged together in a sealed - well - "cartridge". If that's what your headset looks like, and you can find a replacement cartridge bearing that's the same size, I'd think that's all that you'd have to replace. A cursory look through my old Quality catalog didn't turn up any Richie replacement cartridge bearings. If your top goal is to save money, you could take the old bearing to Berry Bearing or some similar supplier and ask if they have something similar. The worst that could happen is it wouldn't work and you'd have to replace the whole headset anyway.

Thanks RG. My goal was to get it fixed with the least amount of hassle- a new complete headset is only 30.00. Think I'll order one and see , pop the stem cap, see what's what, and if the races are part of the "cartridge,", I'll drop the new one in. If I have to replace (pull and press) the races, it will likely be easier to drop it at the shop.
And, if you know the man with the plan, ask for the man...
Thanks again.
